Hey everyone. Been lurking on here for quite awhile now, but just recently made an account. I don't have a long range rifle currently, but I am really interested in getting into it because of the range that I am a member of (COSSA). COSSA has a couple 1000 yard ranges, a 1760 range, a 550 yard range, and a couple 100 yard ranges. So I am definitely looking into it more now than ever. I am interested in PRS style shooting as well as getting back into hunting, which I haven't done since I was a kid.
I am a USPSA pistol shooter, mostly in Open division. I am going to have a lot of stupid questions for you all I'm sure, so please bear with me, but if anyone has USPSA specific, or handgun technique questions I can definitely help out.
Right now I am planning on getting a Howa Bravo in 6.5 Creedmoor with a Viper PST2 5-25, Nightforce 20MOA base, and a Harris bipod. I am trying to keep this experiment cheap while still having good equipment to start with, and that seems like a great beginner setup from what I have read on here.
I still don't know which rings to get, though I am leaning towards either the cheap Burris XTR or Vortex Precision/Seekins matched rings. Not a huge fan of how expensive the Vortex are though, are they that much better than a cheaper ring? I try to treat my stuff pretty well, but I do plan on shooting this rifle in matches and hunting with it as well so they may get banged around a small amount.
I was considering getting the Hornady Match Grade dies, are they decent? Their price is definitely more appealing than some of the other ones out there I have read about on here like the Redding or Whidden. Also, I will say it right up front, I don't like reloading... and I already have to do it a lot (15-20k a year of 9mm). So anything to save time is appreciated. Would loading my ammo (at least practice ammo) on my 650 be a reasonable idea? Or are progressive presses just not accurate enough for this type of reloading?
Along that same (economy) line, has anyone used the cheap eBay/Amazon .308 comps? Do they have a negative effect on accuracy? I have one (sort of a Miculek style) on my AR-15 and it is extremely effective, though I haven't ever compared the groups with and without to see if something strange is happening with the gas there influencing group size.
Thank you in advance, and I look forward to learning a ton from you all! Hope to meet you at the range sometime.
