Hello SH new member here

Hello All,
New member and shooter here. I've been lurking here for awhile now reading various posts and the like. My question is, what can the new shooter do to learn the fundamentals of marksmanship? I have looked up my local forums for any instructor or courses that will teach this but all I am finding is a lot of pistol training courses. I am just not sure how to go about this without coming off as a crazy. I hope you get my drift. California I hear has strict gun laws. I purchased my first rifle last year, a Ruger 10/22, and I recently purchased a Remington 700 sps tactical .223 a couple of weeks ago. I didn't know how much I would enjoy shooting until a friend of mine took me out to the local range. Now it is a great passion of mine. Now every time I shoot I want to do better than the last time. I do read a lot of the posts on here in this section. Thanks for taking the time reading this and any help is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the Hide and also the joy and sometimes frustration of long range shooting. Looks like you have 2 great guns to start off with and you can learn a lot from them even though some don't consider them a long range tool. That lil 22LR is a great tool for learning proper technique and also to use your scope for elevation and wind adjustments out to and beyond 200 yards. The 223 can be used even out to 1000 with the right bullet and again will teach you excellent wind and elevation changes. They also won't beat you to death and crate bad habits that sometimes accompanies the heavier recoiling guns that some new shooters start off with.

Lots of good reading on here if you use the search and do a lot of reading. As you gain knowledge and learn more about what it takes to tackle long range shooting you'll be more prepared on what and how to ask your questions to get better answers from the shooters that are more accomplished.

Good luck and no matter what others say, always remember this is supposed to be fun and a lifelong learning experience. Keep an open mind to what others tell you but also learn to sort thru it all and pick what works for you.

Another welcome. I'm new here too. So far I've learned a lot from the "Fundamentals of Marksmanship" sticky in the Advanced Marksmanship forum:

Also taken a couple of local courses (in GA): NRA Basic Rifle, Long Range Precision Rifle (through Atlanta Firearms Training). Becoming aware of the basics, and routinely practicing them is what seems to help. It's an fun adventure.

Thanks for the welcomes and kind words. My 22lr is much fun shooting 50yd and 100yd targets. But now that I upgraded to the 223 I'm enjoying shooting that more at the moment. Shooting has become such a great passion for me this past year. And so is improving my shot. Thanks for the link to that sticky. I'll be reading it over a few times this weekend.

EDIT: Is the SH online training forum for new shooters? Or is it geared for experienced shooters? Thanks again.

Take a look at the numerous posts on the fundamentals of marksmanship on SH and practice a lot. Don't become lured to self-proclaimed gurus in "advanced" shooting techniques. Accomplished shooters all have one thing in common, they preform the basics exceptionally well. There is no magic sniper pill that makes you an expert overnight. Become a sponge and soak up any knowledge offered to you and above all else, just get out to the range and throw lead down range. Welcome, and best of luck!

Another welcome to the forum.

I got started in long range shooting just about the time the online training came out. The timing couldn't have been better!

The online training is not geared toward advanced shooters. It is probably even more useful to new shooters as you can learn the right way before getting too set in bad habits. Having said that, the fundamentals stay the same - so advanced shooters still get something from the lessons. It is always worth going back and reviewing the basics from time to time.

The lessons do advance to more advanced techniques/applications. But you are on your own pace. Master the basics, and move on to the next lesson when you are ready.

If you join, don't feel like you have to get through all of the lessons right away. Without looking at them right now, I think it is the first three that you would want to watch. They cover the basics of getting behind the rifle, NPA, breathing, and trigger school. Watch and read those a few times before going out to the range. (Actually, dry fire them a lot before going to the range.) Take some notes for reminders when you are at the range.

The other great thing about the online training is that you can ask questions if you don't understand something. It's not like reading a book where it is up to you to figure it out yourself.

Welcome to the Hide. Tons of info to be found here and some very knowledgeable shooters too. Some of them are more than willing to help new shooters too, but I recommend you use the search function before posting questions. Odds are it is already answered (multiple times).

Where are you in California? I don't live there anymore but I visit and may be able to recommend shooting areas or shooters to help you out.

Thank you all for making me feel welcome here. I have been taking in a lot of great info regarding the fundamentals of marksmanship on this site. I also will be purchasing membership to the SH online training soon. Most likely after a new truck purchase in the coming months. But back on topic. My current location is Northern California's Bay Area. After searching for a bit I did find one location in the Sacramento Valley that holds long range matches, and is actually giving a introduction clinic in May. From what I have read it sounds like a good time. I might have to take the drive out there and see these guys and gals hit targets at range. Should be fun. And as soon as this rain storm breaks I'll be heading off to my local range to get back to the fundamentals.

Hi Eric
Im like you a new member. I've just gotten back into shooting after a long dry spell. From what I've seen sofar this group is great and very helpful. I am starting like you with a 10/22 and going up from there. I have an old 8mm Mauser that I've played with but it's shot out and I'm going for a new gun rather than blow money on building it into something maybe later. But welcome hope to hear from all you folks.
