If anyone recognizes what upper this is I would appreciate info on it. It was given to me just as an upper assembly with no matching lower.

Link:
(for some reason the link doesn't open when I click the picture directly but if you click the green "share" button and copy the web link it opens)
  • A1 "LM" marked upper
  • round forward assist button
  • A2? dust cover
  • what looks like a SOCOM profile barrel
  • 7.62 barrel and bolt
  • colt sp1-vintage BCG with exposed firing pin
  • 16 inch barrel with bayo lug but NO markings on it whatsoever including caliber
  • 1960's vintage 3-prong flash suppressor (don't know if original 60's or modern replica)
  • no marking on front sight post but it has a drain hole
  • no marking on bolt
  • single heat shield handguard

Were "LM" uppers used by various companies or only Colt? I'm wondering if this is some transitional colt or some franken-gun put together just using the LM upper. It came with colt-branded 7.62x39 AR mags.

Thank you

Possibly... Bushmaster , Colt , or Rock River Arms ?

A little surprising there aren't more markings on the whole thing.

Can you tell if the bore is chrome lined ?

Is the anodizing kinda purple'ish ? Or is that just the camera ? ( CH v. upper pic)

Thank you for the reply. Its not that purple as it appears in the picture. Barrel is not chrome lined.
I'm just surprised that there are no markings on the barrel or bolt indicating caliber, even though you can tell by the size of the hole that it is not 5.56.

I can't find any similar pictures on the internet, and since LM uppers were just contract spares, I assume this is just a upper put together with available parts.

An old omega mfg upper from the 90's possibly when they were called something else, before davidson defense, or if it has some purplish hue as seen, maybe sendra made a few ar47's(?)

Thanks all for the feedback. I wish it was a 6830 but I guess without any markings anywhere on the upper besides the LM it looks to be a random build, so I'll probably just sell it for parts, Thanks anyways!!

DPMS made quite a few of these back in the day (2010-ish). I believe they were the originators of the "Frankenmag" welded-up hybrid mags, also, but I could be wrong on that.
Colt developed the 7.62x39 AR-15 in the 1980s, which was a funded project from an unnamed entity.

They then introduced a civilian version 7.62x39 Sporter in the early 1990s. I had my hands on one in 1993.

Olympic Arms, M&A Parts, and Model 1 Sales made their own poor versions with those cast FSBs.

ArmaLite Inc. made a quality one later on, followed by LMT. LMT made enhanced 7.62x39 bolts with the lobster tail dual extractor as well, but they were .125” bolt face depth, so extractors folded over like the other cheap imitations.

The OP’s barrel reminds me of the really heavy Olympic Arms pipes.

Are there not any rifling twist markings on the barrel OP?

...Olympic Arms or Model 1 Sales.
I was sitting here thinking to myself, trying to keep myself from posting....

"Do the hand guards feel extra thin and as strong as a model airplane? Charging handle as strong as aluminum flashing? Model 1 sales."

"Does the rear pin hole barely line up with the lower? Oly!"

:D

I looked at your Imgur and the handguards are after-market imitation pieces, very common in the 1990s-2000s.

Your upper receiver doesn’t have any Colt proof and inspections marks on it forward of the ejection port.

Your bolt carrier has a “C” stamped on it, which means it’s most likely a Colt.

Is it an M16 or clipped Sporter carrier?

Your 3-prong flash hider might be surplus original from the Colt 602s, which were replaced with new uppers and birdcage flash hiders.

If you remove the flash hider, don’t use improvised tools. It’s worth something to collectors who are major retro geeks.

The flash hider is only on hand-tight, so I don't need tools to remove (I haven't shot this thing).
The carrier is a Sp1 style exposed firing pin style with a semi-auto style rear end.

Thank you for your input - again it looks like this is just a upper put together with whatever random components were available. Looks like the only thing of interest is possibly the flash hider and the colt Sp1 carrier.
barrel, FSB, bolt all have no markings whatsoever, including rifling twist, caliber info, etc.

no markings on barrel at all :( you would think it would at least say 7.62x39 on it somewhere.

The upper is valuable for retro builds.

Bolt carrier would go well towards restoring an SP-1, since a lot of dudes stripped their SP-1s down to try to make M4orgeries.

The FSB could go towards a 601 or 602 build with the cast construction and sharp edges, which are pretty distinct from forged ones.

Anything Model 1 Sales or M&A parts is pretty worthless though due to low quality and janky assembly.

So I would definitely part this one out.

Thanks again. Unfortunately I wouldn't be able to identify all these parts with certainty, and I don't have the tools to take this upper apart so I'll probably just let it go as is. Thanks for all your input, I was hoping it was an identifiable factory built upper but it is not, so I'll look to just sell this thing. Cheers!
