Hi guys,

Can someone help me choose between some of these actions I'm looking at for a 338LM build?

I have a 1.35'' bartlein blank ready to go, and I want to build in an AI AXSR chassis.

Was considering:

1. Defiance
2. Impact
3. BAT
4. lone peak (this is just a white labelled impact though right?)
5. surgeon
6. Terminus

I know I basically just listed all the available options lol - but I wanted to see what you guys thought. Light bolt lift, 60 degree throw, are very important to me, as well as overall build quality and precision, though that will most likely come down to who chambers the barrel I thought.

Purpose of rifle is to compete with, but I want to stay under 25 pounds and don't want to build a benchrest rifle.

Thanks.

Ide putt the Kelbley Prometheus on the list it’s an awesome action and I’m a surgeon/impact guy personally. I’ve been searching for an excuse to build one in SA but I have an old surgeon in the safe waiting to be a new project already.
Starting to get the idea that I can't go wrong with any of these choices, but BAT/Surgeon definitely have a great rep.

All the specs are listed, and I assume you've looked at the differences, so I won't get into any of that.

Lone Peaks are not Impacts - different Owners, different shops. I like my Lone Peaks and would buy more. I didn't think Surgeons were sold individually to civilians anymore?

I have a Defiance, but wouldn't buy at their current inflated price. You can buy 75* bolts though. I have a Kelbly Prometheus, which is good, and you can grab one from Brownells for barely over $1,100, and you can buy 75* bolts to drop in. I don't like trigger hangers, but that's about the only downside for me so far.

You can grab an Impact for just under $1300, and prefits are widely available from about everyone. From a feature standpoint, I think Terminus Zeus are nailing it, but they can be hard to find.

Being you specified a 1.35" body I think it would be down to Bat and Impact. Impact is probably easier to get prefits for. They have their 787, I am waiting on one from Altus now, that accepts 1.35" and has a larger bolt. I've had a Bat TR and my buddy has the HR, while they are nice I feel as if they are a little pickier on mag feeding than something like the Impact/Lone Peaks that I run.

I don't have much time behind my Zeus but it is appearing to be a strong competitor for both. With 338 you won't be utilizing the QC feature, so it comes down to throw and if you want a cocked indicator on the back of the bolt.

I would just get a zues lol or there new elr action im not sure what that one is called but i just love my zues. Barrel change super easy my 6yr old can do it lol and just super smooth and I love running it

Thank you, also I forgot to mention one of the concerns I had with choosing the right action was to make sure it would have no problem feeding from AW mags, since that is what the AI chassis will use. Or is this not really a concern in the long action game?

Thanks snipers.

They've lowered their prices since the initial bump.
Really? $1645 for a nitrided short action Ruckus is retarded. I like my Ruckus, but it provides nothing over my Prometheus (that I paid $920), or a $1300 Impact or a $1450 Fuzion etc. The only reason anyone is paying the higher price for defiance is because the previous Owner made poor financial decisions and/or the current Owner needs to recoup money from a poor business decision.

A few hundred dollars is a drop in the bucket with this hobby, but still, I won't pay more for literally zero benefit.

Honestly, I own actions from the top three listed. Defiance (2 of them) and BAT are my two favorites. I really am not a fan of the feel of the Impact and will not be getting another. The BAT was the most expensive of the group, but I also had it made custom.

To each his own.

ARC CDG...runs flawlessly with AW mags.

It does in short action flavor…but there is no long action AW magazine. You would be running the long action pattern AICS magazines specifically, typically 5rd magazines. If you want the AXSR get the AXSR, that’s the only way you’re getting double stack magazines, cmon big shot CEO!

Second best time is now. Best time was yesterday.

If you’re also looking at a Fuzion I’m also in the group that would take that. I have both Fuzions and Impacts, and while similar there’s just something about the Fuzion that I like more.

Have been researching Lapua based actions also—what are people’s thoughts when it comes to 1.125” vs 1.0625” tenon diameters? Some guys will only build on a Bat HR, meanwhile some great action companies just use the 1.0625” diameter. Even the terminus Kratos X.

Oops, yeah..I overlooked the .338.

Cheers.

That's a great price, that would be hard to pass over...

Not a lot of bad choices on the custom side either. For the lapua bolt face cartridges I would be tempted to go with the larger tennon actions, like a BAT HR or Surgeon 1581XL (if you can).

Otherwise, all the actions listed will work. I have a Defiance Deviant for my .300NM which works just fine. But not really any bad choices in the list.
