I have done a lot of looking around and reading reviews on here and watching what youtube videos I could find, but still not exactly sure what would work best for my application. I'm currently back in school fulltime with a wife and kid, so I'm on a budget of around 1k.

I think I have it narrowed down to 2 optics. The trijicon Accupower 1-8 and Burris XTR2 1-8. This is what I have learned while researching and some likes and dislikes.

Trijicon 1-8: Good - Glass is great, the red reticle is daylight bright, the turrents are locking and very robust. Bad - reticle is too thick on max magnification, the turrets don't line up without doing some weird stuff.

Burris XTR2 1-8: Good - Glass is about the same as Trijicon. The reticle is daylight bright, the center dot is much finner for more precise aiming. What little I have found it seems to be robust. Bad - turrents don't lock but can be capped(I'm ok with that but would prefer to be locking). I've read several times the glass wasn't great, but could of been people with 1.5-8 commenting.

My intended use will be 1st for hunting deer/hogs/varmits etc inside 300yds and living on my 12.7 Grendel upper. When not fullfilling that roll I will be experimenting with it on one of my 556 rifles.

My requirements are I prefer FFP with exposed turrents so I can dial if time allows or if i want to bang some steel for fun. Decent lowlight brightness but realize its limited with a small objective. Fine enough reticle to make precise shots on game. I'm not going to be shooting groups on paper besides sighting in, but I'm afraid the Trijicon reticle will be too thick to hunt with. If it wasn't for the reticle, I would go with the Accupower. I'm leaning towards the XTR2 with its .1mil center dot but would like to hear from people that may have used one or both for these roles.

I’m pretty sure those two scopes (along with the Primary Arms Platnium) are both made at LOW in Japan. They should share the same base design and mechanics. Glass, reticle and turret specs vary due to Trijicon and Burris design requirements. I’ve heard nothing but good things about all this 1-8 family of scopes. Pick the combination of reticle and features you think will work beat for your situation.

I generally agree with that. All of the current crop of the 1-8x scopes from LOW are quite good.

Personally, I use the Burris since I prefer the way there reticle looks on 1x. The illumination in all of these is day-visible, but not necessarily day-bright. These two are not the same.

PA's new Griffin Mil reticle looks promising, so that will be the next version of this scope I look at.

I have the trijicon with green reticle. It’s a great optic but I will say that the green reticle is barely day time visible. Atleast for me. Glass is good, seems to track well. Built like a tank. No experience with the Burris, but is give trijicon a +1

Red illumination in the Trijicon is brighter.

I've been out of town today and haven't had a chance to read through your replys until now. Sounds like the burris might have the slight edge for my application. I did chat with a guy that had the trijicon in one of the FB groups I'm in and he explained the reticle thickness by comparing it to a picure of a target and it doesn't seem to be as thick as I had imagined (still thick), so I'm not going to rule it out yet. I have a Bushnell LRTSi 4.5-18 on my 20" grendel and the reticle is kinda thick and want to see what it looks like in comparison to what the guy was talking about on the same target. I do have about a month before I'm able to purchase, so I'm going to try pretty hard to get my hands on both.

I had the 1.5-8x burris. It was ok. What bugged me about it was it seemed like the outer edges of the glass had too much distortion. It was kind of distracting for me. It was mainly on higher power and further distance.

Another thing I didn’t care for was the size. I am fine with a 34mm tube on a 1-8x but the length was ridiculous. I think it was 13.4” or something like that. The trijicon is under 11”.

Personally, I would go with the Trijicon and never look back.

1-8x24 Burris is an entirely different animal than the 1.5-8x28 that you had.

Never had the burris 1-8 but I've had nothing but good results with trijicon 1-8 accupower. I run this on my hunting rig. The ability to lock dials and mil hold overs have been invaluable. My one complaint on this optic is the weight. It's a tank but being a tank has its cons.
