So the primary problem I have is choosing which color to use as the base, which then implies which colors to use for contrast.

Eastern Plains of Colorado

Some photos from the area where I shoot.

If this were your rifle, given the AOR, what direction would you go with the camo?

Re: Help me Match my Rifle to the Terrain

Krylon Khaki camo
Krylon Brown camo
Krylon OD Green camo

Base layer of Khaki, then bunch up some of the long grass and hold it in your hand, hold can of brown about 8-10 inches away and spray in short blasts do this for the entire length of the gun, going in a vertical direction with the grass (maybe a little left to right offset but still in a vertical manner) Then go back and do a couple spots of the OD Green in the same way, use the green sparringly

it should turn out like this. It looks dark because my photography skills blow ass

Do you think I should throw in some gray highlights or is there too little scrub for that to be effective?

My main challenge here was to figure out if i should go with a khaki base coat or something a little bit either desert-pale or orange.

Gray background, lighter rather than darker. Indistinct bands of lighter green and straw.

Darker shades and smaller details highlight rather than hide objects.

Barreled action and bottom metal were duracoated in coyote brown. I used Krylon khacki as base on stock and held dried twigs in front of stock and sprayed Krylon brown over the twigs here and there. In the end I put a light khacki overspray over the browns to soften the edges and lighten the whole stock. All paint is Krylon fusion camo. No clear, looks nice and flat and is very durable.

Thanks for the "how to" detail on your results and job! Nicely done. I have a Savage 10 FP as my baby and it is stock. I want to transform it at some point. Learning a lot.

Re: Help me Match my Rifle to the Terrain

I'd go khaki base, FDE/medium brown for the effect, sparing on the dark brown. just a touch of very light OD
I'd mist the FDE/browns over holding lightly bundled grass on the rifle w/ can far away. I actually use pine needles which you may wanna try. You may wanna throw a piece of fish net on there.
I always spray the sides of a flat rate box 4 diff colors then decide from there.

I'm no photographer, and that's made for deep woods hog hunting and such but you get the idea

This is exactly what I had kind of pictured in my head before posting this thread.

Do you find that its effective? Against the green grass there its a little harder to imagine what it would look like out here.

I am guessing that you used the tan of the lines as your primary base coat and then everything else is applied on top of that?

Re: Help me Match my Rifle to the Terrain

Start with a base of lightest color first, couple coats at least & let them dry good, get some plastic plants from the craft store that match the grass's. stay away from black. paint another rifle first next to it - .22, airsoft, supersoaker, and do the mags, bipod, spottingscope, etc at the same time

Re: Help me Match my Rifle to the Terrain

In your AO, you won't be able to see this pattern from more than a few yards away. It just sort of melts into the background. I actually brought back foliage from Colorado to use an examples for these.

Re: Help me Match my Rifle to the Terrain

Here is an example of the melting effect that I mention. I pride myself in producing a camo paint job that actually works great as camo and looks good to boot. Stare at this one for a few seconds without blinking. This one is a personal coyote rifle of mine. A 243 WSSM
