Rifle Scopes help- mounting scope with larue quick release rings

OK... out in the garage today to mount my new Vortex PST viper, 2.5-10x32 FFP. The rings are the larue quick release LT719 rings. I get everything lined up, eye relief right, level.... then go down torque the ring screws down. I torqued them 20 in/lbs. Thought everything was good, until I noticed a gap between the bottom and top of both rings. It wasn't huge, but it was definitely noticeable.

Is that normal?... do I have the wrong torque? Is there maybe something about the rings I don't know (I bought them used so I didn't get any instructions).

If there was no gap, how would the ring halves clamp on to the scope tube?

I figured the top/bottom of the ring should more or less be flush with one another?... am I figuring wrong?

Yes you are figuring wrong. If any rings are to clamp on the scope tube there must be a gap. Try to have the same gap on both sides.
