Equipment: I have a Surgeon 591 action with a Jewell HVR trigger (Rem 700 style w/ safety, no bolt release). The trigger was installed by Surgeon Rifles and I have not adjusted or manipulated any settings except as required to fire the rifle.
The rifle is firing BHA (Winchester) brass with uniformed primer pockets and CCI BR2 primers.
Problem: Roughly every 1/20-1/30 rounds I receive a light primer strike. In the event of a light strike, if I rechamber and fire the round, it goes off normally.
My wife's rifle, a Rem 700 w/ a Timney trigger, has not experienced a single light primer strike issue despite shooting roughly the same # of rounds. In my mind, this rules out the primers being the issue.
Troubleshooting so far:
I removed the firing pin from the bolt and rigorously cleaned the internals, including the firing pin hole. While I would say the internals were a bit dirty, they were not filthy, as I only have 650 rounds through the rifle. I also squirted a little bit of lighter fluid on the trigger and dried it out with canned air. My last range session of ~ 20 rounds after cleaning I had no light strikes, but today I had 1 light strike of ~ 25 rounds.
I would say the rifle is well cared for and has not been subjected to rigorous abuse. I believe there is no chance that dirt, debris, etc. has seeped into the trigger causing problems.
I do not load hot. My .308 load consists of 178 BTHPs and 44gr of Varget, and I clock about 2700 fps. The primers and case head show absolutely no signs of overpressure.
I have found the Jewell manual online here:
http://www.accurateshooter.com/technical-articles/jewell-trigger-users-manual/
However, this trigger is something I am very reluctant to adjust without some more experienced guidance, especially since some of you may direct me elsewhere.
Any help is tremendously appreciated.
