Very new to long distance shooting and I'm just curious if anyone can direct me to reading material on the basics of how things work, I'm good with elevation but I don't quite understand how to read Windage and judge distance

The Wind Book for Rifle Shooters was an interesting read for someone learning how to read and shoot in wind. It is available through Midway, Amazon, and Alibris books as well as others. Check multiple sources as prices can range from about $17 to $30+, based on where you get it! Google is your friend. Good luck!

What kind of scope are you shooting with? IOW, is it a mildot (or MOAdot) reticle or just a hunting style duplex reticle?

Its good that you are doing the research upfront. If you are using a midot reticle, there is a simple formula/ matrix to use based on BC and wind increments. It has worked for me so far. You will find it in this post,(in red) although the original author is somewhere online.

Other than that, I plug windspeed into Ballistic AE and it gives me a quick hold (kinda like cheating)

Nah...that's akin to saying something you did/used to win a real threat-to-your-life fight was cheating. Everything is fair when winning a real fight and using your skills to put the bullet where you want it to go. .

Read the books. Watch the videos.

Go take a long range shooting course.

PRACTICE

Reading the wind is what separates the really good shooters from the others. Anyone can deal with elevation. :)
