Hey gear heads

What trans is in the 2500?

The 5.7 is an 8HP70 and is sort of the PITA to work on as it’s “sealed”. It needs to be leveled and pan swapped to get the fluid change correct.

I have a “built” ram 1500 street truck that I’ve pulled the trans and put a converter in. Not a hard job per se just heavy and without help it sucks balls.

I do not know if it's possible or not. At the minimum most conversions like this would require a new transfer case new axle yokes and new or modified drives shafts. As well as likley needing to reprogram the computer and possibly needing a new transmission wire harness. It would probably cost as much as two of the proper transmissions.

Ok.

That much would simply qualify it as a no.

If not possible is there a beefed up version for the 1500 series?
There almost certainly upgraded parts and tweaks that can be done. I haven't rebuilt automatics since well before 2017 but there were usually upgradeable parts and diffrent things you could do to make them hold up a little better. If you need a 2500, it might be easier to buy a 2500.

The stock 8HP70 will hold tons of power and torque. People are running whippled 5.7’s on them.

If you have a 6 speed in the 2500 it’s a junk transmission. Just because there is more numbers on the truck doesn’t mean it’s stronger.

What issue are you having and why do you want to swap it?

Borrowing from a parody about a farmer whose farm was wrapped up in Johnson Grass. (When asked about what to do with the Johnson grass, the State Department of Agriculture replied, “sell farm, move away.”)

Sell truck, buy a 2500.

No joke, if your use is tearing up the running gear, you really need a bigger, tougher truck.

Exactly. I'm unclear as to what deficiency we're trying to correct by swapping out a ZF 8HP70 for the 66RFE. Is the truck not already in the shop often enough? If so, then maybe this swap would do the trick.

Who can forget the disposable automatic transmissions on mid 90s Dodge vans and pickups- absolute garbage.

That is unfortunately not at all relevant to this conversation, but thank you for the contribution.

The only automatic transmission from the 1990s that is any good is the GM 4L80, and even that has its problems. The rest are pretty much garbage by any reasonable standard.

Meh.

The original purpose and intended use when bought (2017) and the current usage are not the same.

What I need is a 2500-3500 diesel. Until I can get one, I have what I have.

I was just curious if it were possible to swap if this one fails or if there are upgrades to the one I have. Once again, when it fails.

When towing I never get out of 4th to 5th unless it’s downhill. Stays in the 3500-4500 rpm range.

I could swap out differential gears(392 currently) for better towing but I don’t want to waste money if not needed.

Plenty of power and pulling except on steeper slopes, which after moving is everything.

You are talking about the RFE66 correct? Fam has the Aisin AS69RC in a 2500 HO Cummins and not a problem yet. I was adamant when they were shopping that they avoid the RFE68 and get the HO to get the "better" transmission.

That kinda answer a question I had in the future.

I would think a 396 or 411 gear swap would make a heck of a lot more sense than trying to swap a transmission.

Save your money and keep trucking with the 1500. As long as the trans temps/engine temps are good, 3500-4500 rpm is fine.

I believe there are 392’s now so it would have to go beyond 411’s

But yeah. I was thinking something along those lines.

You do not want to go above 3.92’s with the 8 speed. Instead I would look at tire size.

And yes do not buy a RFE66 trans.

I have a 2012 ram and a 2015 ram. The 12 is the rfe trans and the 15 is the 8 speed. I will eventually 8 speed swap the 2012.

If your towing that much what did you do to suspension? These trucks suck for towing u less helper bags are installed. Like mention above 3500 ain’t that bad. They like RPM’s.

With those 3.92’s your first through 3rd goes fast lol. I had a Detroit tru trac put in the toy truck with 3.92 and holy shit. That truck is a blast but forget traction.

Find a local trans builder. Have him put his favorite flavor of shift kit/fix kit along with good clutches, clean fluid and filter often, and a good converter.
