Having lived in both Billings and Bozeman Montana, and the neighboring state Wyoming, I feel like I can give a credible opinion on both states...
One of the biggest problems are the MT voters- on average they're more naive compared to the average WY voter and more likely to believe the BS from the DEMS & RINOs.
More of MT's citizens are from Scandinavian countries where the people are much more likely to be conned into leftism. It hurt's MT's politics and culture that there are many more indian reservations, and ski/snowboard resorts, compared to Wyoming. Big budget movies have also made MT a destination for many- especially from the big money, BLUE areas of CA, WA, and OR.
Since at least the early 90s and that movie ARRTI, all of the above have made MT a destination for very many wealthy Kommifornians who buy huge ranches, and expensive McMansions in town, all over western MT, making land and housing costs skyrocket.
I much prefer the scenery and terrain of western Montana over both eastern MT and most of the state of WY, but finding a nice small to midsize ranch at a price affordable to the non-wealthy, is a real challenge.
Also, BlackRock, Bill Gates, Ted Turner, and similar entities and other billionaires, have bought up hundreds of millions of acres in Montana.
The struggle is real, but the effort is worth it.

I would say your view is both accurate and well explained. I see that all around me. Here, going into summer the U Haul lots are full of trucks and enclosed trailers people have dropped off at the end of their journey.
I traveled and worked all over America. I have never, ever seen so many mini storage warehouses that were built in the last 5 years. They continue to built giant storage facilities as well as large enclosed units that will house a 40' motor home or Fifthwheel. Watched an investor build 6 - 8 enclosed parking units for motor homes. Never put up a sign or advertisement. They were rented before he finished building them.
I'm not sure what the plans are for people coming here on a "wing and a prayer" with the hope things will improve, financially.
Having grown up on the Idaho side of the Tetons I can testify to this as well. With family still in the area and also in both MT and WY the rush of commie money into the areas since the 90’s to buy up land has driven the cost of living out of reach for most. Been trying to find a way back but nothing but a dream thus far.
It's really sad because the majority of native Idahoans, Montanans, Wyomingites, and South Dakotans are Americans and not democrats, so if they're priced out because of some Kommifornians or other dems- it hurts that Red state's elections, culture, and authenticity.
If you take those thoughts and expand them to a worldwide scale... You will see the path of the Deep State's (or what ever you want to label it) plan to rule the world. Two examples are Europe and the Middle East. The cultures in those countries are being "diluted" as well. The strongest countries with the deepest foundations are being targeted.

While this example is not in Montana, it is in Idaho and is a good example of the "Government" taking over the water. Like cancer, there have been new laws that fly under the radar yet can leave a man's homestead high and dry when it comes to water. Think twice before relocating to an area where Water Rights are being bought up (one way or another) by the big money operations. They buy off the local governments and then you have desert property... Once the big money buys all the property then the government turns the water back on.

Rural cost of living is markedly higher than living in one of the larger cities.

I should add, low for a certain $ value compared to where I live - but with that having been said, real estate is much more expensive in Montana, so the bill would inevitable be higher for the same house, because it would cost more there.

IMHO.... Two working adults with two children will need to knock down $300k / year in order to simply exist. $400k / will allow you to be comfortable.

I am somewhat prepared for the increase in coat of living, especially coming from Iowa and having a mortgage at 3.3%, so any move will increase my cost of living. Case in point, my brother is paying $1350/mo for a 2-bedroom apartment here now.Pro's and Cons:

If you read some of my post, I will frequently discuss the cost spectrum from "region to region".
Those that settled in the Kalispell region 5 - 10 years ago are established as far as mortgage, store of supplies, taking advantage of deals that are seasonal, etc. So, those folks will give a, somewhat, different perspective.
Political climate is changing. Soros money is pouring in to change the political landscape.
Influx of Liberals are robbing from the rich and building homeless compounds.
If you follow the "Healthcare Ratings" Montana is usually a 3 while the mega cities (Seattle, Minneapolis, etc) are a #1. Lifeflight routinely takes critical patients to either and not to regional hospitals.
If you or your wife is job shopping, always ask if there is a "housing allowance" as part of the pay.
If you move "Bring it with you ... or ... Do without."
You will find a "Boom Town" mentality when you arrive.

As of May, it is taking more than 4 months to sell, and the selling price is trending downward.
That is a huge drop in one year, and a doubling of the wait time to get a sale (those sellers were hoping for last year's numbers and timing).
A few reasons:
I traveled and worked in the heavy industrial world. Every big, overtime job had hands from Montana working those jobs. I always tried to get my fitter to be one of the guy's from Montana. hard workers, good attitude and there was always an invite to come up and fish or hunt with them at the end of the job. Their wages went back to Montana.
A lot of workers have been on jobs where the wages were inflated in order to keep the best workers with that company. They can pay a $2,000 / month mortgage.
The largest Investment Bankers / Brokers are buying up real estate and snagging those $500k homes before the man on the street even knows they are for sale.
Some are living in the "company House" as a benefit to their wages..

A $500k home can be turned into rental property or an Airbnb.... The movie people like Yellowstone gobble up the rentals and Airbnb's when they are on location.
The elite have 3 - 4 vacation homes with one being in Montana. It is a tax write off for company entertainment, etc. They buy property at The Hampton's for the expensive properties. That is where their trophy house is located.
