Hi , I live in valpo indiana. Kind of sucks no far ranges around here unless knowing someone with land for it. Jasper polaski has i believe a 200 or 250yd range , Kingsburry a 100 . I am surprised i have not got into guns in a serious manner yet. I have like 25k in rc toys i no longer use, i have 8 toys (dirtbike, quads, jetskis, snowmobiles)all modded . probably 100k of my money in that . And in past 6 wk im up to 6 hand guns (460 xvr 14in, s&w m2.0 3.5in 9 with laser, Ruger mk 4 hunter with vortex 3moa and trigger/action mods, S&w performance center sw22 with trigger/action mods and venom 3moa as well, taurus 692 9mm/357mag 7 shot revolver, Springfield XDM OSP threaded barrel 4.5in 9mm with rock river precision extreme trigger and action mods, and springer precision open compensator and venom 3moa set up for race gun action steel (not that ill compete ) I also just ordered my first rifle. HOWA HCRA uses the australian precision rifle chassis and chambered in .308 my second gun costing 1k or more. Cant imagine 2k or more on a gun but after researching actions, barreled actions, jewel triggers, high end barrel's , stocks etc now i see its easy. I may look for some used higher end setups then perhaps if they go for great deals. I am not sure what a good deal is considered (perhaps 65%-70% of msrp. Not sure if there are certain people who load rounds of hard to find ammo for good prices. Reason i went with .308 is u can find ammo for as cheap as 35cents a round steel case.
SPeaking of ammo some attributes dont make sense. 6mm creedmoor is a more popular target competition round vs 6.5 creedmoor and also a smaller round in terms of brass(i think) and bullet size. Yet cheapest i see 6mm is 72cents a round where as 6.5 being 50cents. Mind blowing a smaller round costing that much more for being a standard round. Not like its a 6mm dasher. Speaking of 6mm dasher (being the most used round comp. wise ) what can those rounds be bought for at cheapest. Im all about best performance for the price , best accuracy for price, best scope for price, and so on. I may buy a Howa oryx .223 20in next week new i found for 850 new. I plan to shoot 250yd max as far as range goes, and a friend has neighbor with a 400yd stretch with back drop i can shoot at too . I would also want a nice .22lr precision rifle too. May just cheap out and get a RPR and put decent scope, Or a cz455 22lr in a 500 MDT chassis if possible. Idk i cant see spending more than a grand on a 22lr and having a 1lb trigger. Does a 11deg crown using a muzzle brake make a difference or is that for barrel's not using brake.
By Trade i am a union machinist but do millwright work in the mills machineshop. i work averaging 80/wk this year (easy ) No i cant do gun smithing at work and would be to lazy too. Just as i am afraid if i got into reloading i would be to lazy to actually do it. Kind of like i went and shot my guns once so far in past few weeks. I am in shape too its just at 38 i do like to relax maybe to much being not much free time to get that motivated.

Noted , If i buy brass ammo are there people who reload for others where as its cost effective vs buying from a retailer ? Would be nice to have a reloading setup but i hate seeing bad reviews on pretty much any brand of reloader. I wonder what they use in factories to reload as if they never have issues. I wonder whe best performing round vs cost of decent ammo is then? Did i f up by buying a .308 . Thankfully after bills i have about 6k/mth left over take home. But is nice to save too at the same time. In terms of reloading my own ammo vs buying yes i would love the new .300prc , or 6.5prc , or 6mm dasher but as far as buying ammo f those rounds.

Pay $15 a month, watch all of the training videos. Everytime you go to the range, have a purpose on what/why you're shooting. $1 a round, $2 a round, 30c a round, doesn't matter if you don't know why you're pulling that trigger. I learned the hard way after shooting 400 rounds on my 308 ~ $400 for... no real reason at all. Now I'm back to sitting at home dry firing and practicing NPOA. At least I don't flinch anymore when I pull the trigger with real rounds.

Ammo is pretty consistently priced between 308, 6.5, 6x*, the real difference is barrel life. I chose my 308 so I could get 8000 rounds of practice as a noobie before I shoot a 6x and have it burn out after 2000 rounds. So there was some cost savings there ~ 1500$ for 3 barrels.

If your goal was > 1200 yards consistently, then yeh 308 wasn't the right round.

I do not hunt, to be honest i do not know what i want to do. NO competitions around here that i know of. Im basically a lazy pos (or how i feel to often) I mean my dumb ass has 10k in pro level off road rc vehicles yet i only raced twice 2 yr ago and couldnt stay consistent enough and hated working on the f'n things. I put 56k about in 2 stage 3 450ish hp jetskis yet only went like 8 times this summer due to lower back issues. single since feburary. To many libtards around nwi. I literally bought my .460mag 14in revolver for the wow factor at a indoor range in town yet have not gone there to shoot yet. Did shoot at a friends though with few acres already . I bought the .308 because it seemed like a powerful enough round for the cost of cheap ammo. hitting 1in. groups at 200yd is not biggest concern. But perhaps having one gun and round that can would be cool. It supposedly is a sub moa gun but that would be like 2in group at 200yd if im correct. Ill have to look what PRS comp is , or ELS. The reason i built my 9mm race gun is becasue i want to take those shoot n c targets with the 4 bullseyes on it and get good at shooting 4 double tap shots for time at like 25 or 50ft with venom red dot. pick up gun 2,2,2,2 down hit timer on phone and add up score. Perhaps i just think of weird shit on my own. Action steel shooting seems fun too why i bought and modded 2 22lr handguns. How many rounds is practical to shoot out of a rifle at a range when doing precision shooting? I guess i wouldnt mind spending 1 dollar a round if only shooting 50-100rd. a time. perhaps the flattest round is a good round for me to get in a rifle. THere are so many round names that its mind boggling. Clearly creedmoor is popular. PRC rounds are new from hornady and if not shooting competition i guess not worth the extra cost for me. If you got a buddy with a few acres and will let you shoot on it, man that's pretty darn awesome. Spend some money on some steel targets / hangers and setup a fun little range. A few acres should let you shoot out pretty far, make sure you're safe. Build proper backstop and follow all the rules.

I wouldn't buy another rifle if you already bought your 308. Shoot a few thousand rounds out of it until you know what you want to do with it... I got back into shooting this summer, and my round count since June is around 3000 rounds of rimfire, mainly 2500 on rifle, 500 on pistol. My rimfire is for NRL/PRS type matches, which I really enjoy, and is pretty dirt cheap ~5-10c a round. 500 rounds of .308, mainly around recoil management, so I removed the muzzle brake. Another 500 rounds of 9mm doing a few IDPA/USPSA like matches. The closest PRS centerfire match for me is about 2 hrs away, so I've been too lazy to venture out there... The rimfire matches are all 5min to 30min away, and have done 6 of those so far.

I went shooting with a friend(his .300 prc ) and he had a 2moa ,1moa ,.5 moa , .25 moa plates set up at 500 yd and I hit the .25 moa (1.25dia.) plate twice in a row. probably won’t do that again for awhile but he barely ever wants to shoot on his parents land . So that is the 500.25 in my name .

Hot shooting right there. I only met one other guy who used to be a member here who was capable of that kind of shooting. He was also one of the few people to master the Phoenix Eye. Anywho....

Moa due to finer adjustment . I got lucky af . There is a video on YouTube 4 guys in a row hitting .5 moa several times in a row each at 500yd and pretty center . So theoretically they all hit .25moa too . I hope a 1000 vortex scope will be good enough for accuracy when I build a better rifle ? Lot i have to still research about .
