HK super 90

Does anyone have any experience with the HK stamped m1s90?
I just bought one with a 19in barrel, ghost ring sights. How can I tell if it is a pre ban model or do I already know that since it is an HK import. Also what improvements or modifications has anyone made to this shotgun. Thanks-J

You should be able to tell when it was made by the date codes. I have the same shotgun and it sounds pre-ban to me. HK originally imported Benelli before the ban. And not long after that Benelli started importing their own products.

I enjoy shooting mine but it only likes high brass shells. Mine is still considered new to me since it probably had less than 500 rds through it.

As far as improvements there is nothing wrong with it already. I have heard stories of people adding side saddles and flashlights which would cause cycling issues. But mine is as it came from the factory.

GG&G makes a extended charging handle and a couple of sling mounting hardwares. Also I think Mesa Tactical makes a few Benelli items.

Here are the date codes:

So if the code is HC then it was made in 1972.

Your H&K should also have a bolt that was machined a little different, which allows you to manipulate the bolt and float an extra round on the carrier. The newer Benelli guns won't let you do that.

Mine will do that as well. You can completely load up the weapon. With a round on the loading gate it will function properly. This would jam up most other semi-auto shotguns.

If you need to buy any parts, be sure to check the serial number range that the part was made for. I've noticed that some of the parts are made to fit guns that have a higher serial number range than my older H&K.

I have the same weapon, ive put a side saddle, forward light, plus 2 on the foregrip, a gg&g charging handle and oversized safety. I havent had any more cycling problems after the upgrades then I did before. It is temperamental on which shells are ran in it but no problems due to upgrades. Overal, solid weapon system.

I've got an old HK (Benelli) M1 Super 90 that I bought new and have hunted with for years. The buffer spring and tube up in the stock wasn't rustproof and I replaced the buffer assembly with a stainless unit I got from some duck hunting catalog for about $200 and it has worked flawlessly ever since. The only problem, if you call it that, is that it won't cycle reliably with the cheap ultra-lite dove loads,but it is absolutely reliable with every thing else.

Bought mine in the early 90's. Like judgedelta suggested, it can be finicky about the light "dove loads." Was told by the HK folks then that the best way to "cure" that problem is by shooting the M1 Super90 a LOT. That will break in the spring mechanism that is part of the recoil-operating system. After following the HK directions, mine will digest EVERYTHING from dove loads to slugs. It is truly a great shotgun. By the way, Brownells carries spares for it.

A few years ago Brownell's offered in factory parts HK section a recoil system designated 'for light loads' I purchased one for my S90 and have not had problem with any loads since. The new Brownell's does not list so moot.
I have noted that straight stock M90's seem to choke a lot less the PG models with el cheapo loads.

I added a side saddle to my HK super 90 and it ruined the reliability when the side saddle was loaded. I assume the extra weight on the otherwise lightweight receiver caused problems for the recoil operation. It's very clear the loaded side saddle was the problem as it was testable and repeatable. I eventually removed the side saddle and threw it in the trash.

The only modification I made was to replace the original choke with an adjustable one for 3-gun matches.

One problem with the Super 90 during stressful operation such as a match is that you get "Bennelli thumb" during reloads. Keep some bandages handy.

the gg&g bolt release is high at 125 dollars. the sling and charging handle are 25 each? what gives?
