Canadians are upset that the US may raise tariffs to match their own, and apparently upset that Trump jokingly refers to them as the potential 51st state. They've taken to booing our national anthem at their hockey games. Problem is: they've had a most favorable trade imbalance for decades(essentially ripping us off thanks to our feckless politicians), and because of their favorable proximity to the US border, they don't have to spend much on their own national defense. In other words, the US has been their patsy, like the rest of the world, and the liberal left. But their 'privileges' have become their 'rights' now, and they're upset that the gravy train may come to a halt. Thankfully, the US won the hockey game. But their level of immaturity perfectly matches that of the liberal left in this country and elsewhere. Seems to be a universal trait.

I'll voice an unpopular opinion...

I don't think National Anthems of any country has a place in any organized sports whether it'd be at the professional, amateur, collegiate, or academic level.

I'll give a pass on this for the olympics since the teams do represent nations but outside of that- it's just like the pledge of allegiance/yet another public display of false patriotism that doesn't amount to a hill of beans yet for some reason we entertain this nonsense generations later by proponents that likely have little understanding of why we even do this in the first place.

You a Canuck? Hoser.

Not a Canuck- actually am even wearing a hoodie of my local AHL team (of which I'm a season ticket holder with for the 1st time this season).

But as a lover of hockey- I stand by my statement. I think it's nonsense to start the school day with the pledge of allegiance (especially considering that many public schools aren't producing students able to pass basic math and literacy exams) and I also think it's nothing short of ridiculous that we play the National Anthem at any sporting events from grade school - Professional. There is nothing about the roots of theses sports (especially hockey & soccer) that is so star spangled awesome that we need to publicly 'thank America' before a bunch of 13 year olds play a game. It's just an example of what I consider to be "false" patriotism that coincidently coincides with "public" patriotism. It's a nonsensical display put on by an unquestioning populace and we just 'accept it' as normal.

I'd argue that nothing in this country has ever been solved by playing the national anthem at a little league game.

And we continue to double down on this manifestation by making extra 'rules' of doing 'it' right. I'd respectfully challenge anyone to provide a valid argument of how wearing a hat (whether it's a baseball hat, a beanie, a top hat or a sombrero) has anything to do with pride in one's country. But we preface the playing of the national anthem by asking folks to remove their hat as part of the 'somber' display of national pride.

Certainly- regardless of how one feels about the National Anthem being played before a game (of all levels) we can agree with the head covering portion of my comment. Even if you believe the 'hat' portion to be an otherwise 'part of the deal', surely you can still find some questionable 'exceptions' that exist to this deal... women are 'exempted', jewish headgear is exempted, muslin headgear is exempted, etc etc. But you're attending a sporting event for team "America" and your baseball cap proudly displaying "team America"'s logo is disrespectful to America if you wear it for 3 minutes time while a song plays...

George Carlin certainly had a lot to think about this practice and I agree with him.

You’re full of shit and just troll posting to start something. Points for that, but I disagree.

They may have Canadian citizenship.....but they are NOT 'real' Canadians!
Real patriots of any nation would never disrespect the National Anthem of another nation, let alone our historical alley.....and home to many of our relatives.
I heard this on the Canadian news here as well. And to people in our neck of the woods, this display was sickening....end of story.
We've been standing in honor of the Star Spangled Banner at any venue it is played. Most of us can sing it as well as most of you.....out of simple respect for our good neighbor.
Do we agree on everything? Hell, no! But you don't take your football, and go home pouting like 4 year old!

Until '47 they were subjects... so it's not like they have any patriotic traditions.

Except hockey. They pledged allegience to Howie Meeker for 30 years... So it's not like they know how to respect 'real' citizens and patriots!

Oh I'm often a troll but in this case I'm actually giving my personal thoughts on the topic.

I'm not doing a John Wayne & "calling you out partner" type of thing here with this response either (you and I typically get along rather well after all) but may I ask why you feel like the opinion I voiced is argumentative?

Not trying to be a smart ass to you either, just wasn't sure if you were referencing the Pledge of Allegiance or National Anthem component specifically or something else that I may have said. I'm actually quite open to hearing your thoughts one way or the other.

That said- it wasn't my intention but we may be hijacking @Dunraven 's thread by having this conversation and while it's the Pit, I don't want to take away from his thread. @lash if you want to continue this discussion (and I'm gtg if you do) please just give me the high points of your counter thoughts and I'll even start the thread.

I spent a lot of years as a corporate trainer, and had Eastern Canada as part of my responsibilities. The only time I ran into asshats was in Quebec province. The frenchies think they are special with their language and history. That game was played in Montreal...nuf said.
64 years of dealing with eastern canucks, I can say with 100 percent confidence that you are full of shit when you say it is the french canucks only . Nuf said .

A perfect example of what multi culturism and diversity is our strength and the rest of that bullshit produces. No unity and loyalty to nothing but self.
