So I have a family member who's going hog hunting and he wants to know what ammo he should use for is AR and possibly a 30-06. Any thoughts and advice is appreciated. Hand loading is out of the question.

I'm with Maelek on this one. Unless you're going after them all the time and really trying to kill as many as you can, then the .30-06 will be just fine. If he does end up using the AR, then tell him to use the heaviest soft points his rifle can handle. Hollow points will also work but I would not use FMJ if I were him, unless it was a headshot. And STAY AWAY from ballistic tips.

They take big ass hogs down here all the time with the .223.
It works just fine, but proper bullet selection is important.
Winchester 64 grain power point is an excellent choice as is any of the heavier match bullets.
Hell, I know a guy that uses a 17 rimfire magnum, but these are out of a stand and hogs on feeders.
Any of the winchester/remington/hornady 150 grain soft point loads will work just great out of the '06

Amen on the 64's and any of the 68/69/75/77 grn 223 line will work wonders on anything you'll find there. Have a hoot and take some pix!

Neck shots/behind the ear will drop them in their tracks. Biggest sow I dropped was with a .204.

Never been but I've been thinking about it more and more. There was an article I read a couple months back that recommended at minimum 30 cal of some sort as well as a backup pistol if you're on the ground because they might come after you?

I will add this:
Do NOT shoot behind the front the front shoulder like you would for a heart shot on a deer.
A hog's heart is located between the front shoulders about a 1/3 up from the bottom.
Behind the ear drops them in their tracks.
Screw tracking.

Is his '06 an m1 garand?
I'm getting an extra one converted to a tanker, 35 Whelen and modified to accept a BAR magazine. It's gonna be the baddest li'l truck gun EVER!(in my small world anyway)
But a tanker garand in '06 would still be a badass pig gun....sorry gun A.D.D is kicking in again.
Ditto on the above two replies. draw a line from there elbow to their ear, anywhere on that line, foward of the shoulder, is a neck snapping anchor shot.

He's got an old Remington I believe 7400 semi-automatic '06. Box magazine and such. I'd tank a standard Garand over that thing any day of the week.

I used to steam with a boy from duluth, MN......phook me, I'll have to dig through the memory banks for the lad's name. I can still picture his face, but it'll take a day or so to dig his name up from 24 years ago!

Hog hunting is my hunting religion and I would not recommend Hog hunting with a 223 however it does work. For trophies on a hog trophy hunt i use a barnes tsx 168 gr in a 308 either and M1A or a Bolt gun. I have killed hogs with an AR because we were trying to kill or terminally wound a whole brood of pigs by shooting them over bait and just tried to punch as many holes in as many as possible. What I have had success in doing is what some of the other guys led to and that is head shots or behind the ear shots. The 223 is great for putting it in their ear and have em drop. IF your rifle is that accurate because of its scope and barrel set up and you are going to be inside 200 yards or so OK then. What I would do is get a really nice 223 that shoots really accurate and zip em in the side of the head with the 223 and they will fall. If you feel like you are not gonna be good enough for head shots and you might divert to the body with a 223 yet you want to recover the hog for trophy or meat dont shoot the body with a 223. They are VERY VERY tough and can run for a long time wounded with that little piddly round. Either be a Surgeon or Be a Barbarian but choose your shot to your projectile and your capabilities.

When I go in close I use an old Remington mdl 81 semi auto in 35 Rem. When long shots use the 300 Win Mag.

Either way you go try to break both shoulders or head shoot em or they tend to run a long way and good luck finding em.

Get a dpms .308, the cheapest ammo you can find and a stack of p-mags. Only stop shooting when you are out of bullets or out of pigs, which ever comes first.
We also apply this rule to .223, 9mm, 45 acp, .22, 30-06, .243, 7.62x39, 7.62x25 etc. and it works equally as well.
I like shooting them in the ass so I get to go hand to tusk with them. A 6 D cell mag light works wonders on the old noggin. Plus doing this really connects you with nature, you know?
Or just run them over with your pick up. That works great too.

Depends on the type of hunting. 556 great for hunting groups. If you're gonna sit in a stand and kill one, take the '06. Hogs aren't armored vehicles. Hit em correctly per caliber and no tracking needed.

223 will work fine, I have taken many hogs with a 223.
I shot this one last week, 300+lbs at 265yards with 75gr BTHP Steelmatch ammo. He went 15 yards and dead. Shot through the shoulder.

I have hogs that just in the last few days have been rooting no more than 5 ft from my carport.
I have never eaten any wild pig, but I understand it is good.
My problem is that these pigs come around when I am asleep. I gotta get the game camera up to set a general time to be up and waiting, I guess.
I think I will go Barbarian and use the 45-70.

AR's work even tiny AR-Seven's (5.7x28), but I prefer the 300 blackout subsonic 208 A-Max and Thunderbeast 30P-1.
I slammed one of these big guys in the shoulder, years ago with a Rem 7 mag with 140's at 150 yards. Hit him hard, but never found him. Valuable lesson learned that day. Almost any bullet placed in the ear hole will drop them immediately.

Save the semi auto for when you need to shoot a bunch of them when getting rid of vermin for a farmer or rancher.
