Hunting & Fishing Hogs are tearing up my place!

I went out this weekend to my range and found hogs like the place just as much as I do.

For those lucky enough to not have a hog problem, here is an idea of what they do. Imaging giving a high school football team a bunch of shovels and pick axes then letting them loose on the field to tear it up. Hogs basically do that! A place I didnt get a picture of had an area 25 yards by 25 yards totally torn up with holes a couple feet deep! The only way to fix that area is smooth it out with a box blade.

Hunting them isnt a problem. Getting them to show up when I am waiting for them is... Next week I will spend a few evenings at the range and I plan on fermenting some corn for bait.

Sorry buddy, but you won't get any sympathy from me. I have about 10 acres to repair before I can cut hay this summer.

My problem is that the hogs here are so nomadic that they may show up and do their damage, but they may not be back for a month. It makes hunting them really hard.

When we have them show up on a new place we will place a cheap feeder on the new spot and bait them. The reason we bait is to try and keep them in one spot and try and kill the ones that roam.If you can't just dig a hole with a post hole digger and layer corn,dirt,corn,dirt and with all the rain we have it will sour itself and make them dig deep.

I feel for ya retrieverman. We have the brush cutters on the property and it sucks for them to. The hogs on our property act the say way as yours. When I had the feeder up, they ignored it. I get a picture of them once every month or so if I am lucky.

I grew up in an area where a large working ranch was subdivided into 20 acre parcels. Big time pig country. The "rich and famous" started moving into the area and building their expensive yards. The pigs would come through in herds of 30 and 40 at a time and destroy a $50K landscape job in minutes. My friend and I gained a rep for hog hunting, and we'd get calls..."please come kill the pigs!!!" Oh, well, if you insist.

We shot well over 100 pigs in a 2 year period back in the late 70's. It's still one of my favorite things to do. (I just shot a 375lb boar this last weekend with my bow)
You can go to the day old bread store and get loaves of bread for near nothing. Go to the back of a grocery store and get the throw-away veggies and fruits, or better yet, put out a big stinky gut pile. Pigs will eat just about anything rotten, including each other. They can't see very well at all, but they can smell a flea fart up wind. They can hear pretty well, too. Since they're primarily nocturnal, the best time is right before dark, or just before daylight while they're on the move. If you have a big stinky bait pile, get down wind and sit on it about an hour before dark, and be ready to shoot just at dusk. Sometimes they'll come crashing and squealing and you can hear them a hundred yards away, but sometimes they just suddenly appear without a sound.

We have tried everything to get rid of them and the best thing is to trap them. The best bait is corn soaked in diesel, you dont need to sour it just poor diesel over it. Nothing will mess with it except the pigs. Good luck

I feel for you. I shoot as many as I can on our property. Haven't seen many this year so far, even though with it being as wet as it is, there are a plenty of signs (torn up hay meadows, etc.).

I have to agree with you guys. The hogs are very unpredictable hence hard to hunt. They seem to come and go , very nomadic. I get very little sleep when out at my place, huntin from 2200 hrs to 0400 hrs, just have to be out there when they are.

You can't stop them, they moved onto our place an hour south of Abilene about 3 1/2 years ago and I have averaged about 75 or killed a year and they are just getting thicker. There are times when the seem to disapear for a month or so after I hunt them hard for a few weeks but they always come back. I use a ITT pvs 14 on a lwrc 308 now with an aimpoint. I just stake out our feeders. My friend has a masters and phd in wildlife management and he said at the rate they multiply you just simply can't kill enough of them do hurt the population. even shooting them out of a helicopter they will come back. On the flip side they are fun to hunt and can kill them with anything.

i have a place in the panhandle and farm wheat. the hogs are thick but they dont do much damage at all on my place. they will root up johnson grass but the graze on the wheat just like cattle and deer. i really like having them around. they are fun to hunt and they taste MUCH better than deer.

Cage traps will probably be you best option if you really want to try to get it under control. There's lots of info of how to make them if you have the equipment, or you can purchase them, but it costs a little more.

Where is your place South of Abilene? I have leases in Valera and Balinger and we don't have any hogs.

We have been covered up with hogs for 15 years or so. They just get thicker and thicker. Several land owners have quit day jobs and ranching, put hog wire fence around the property to keep the hogs in, built sleeping quarters and started an outfitting business. Customers come from all over the country to kill hogs. They now buy wild hogs from other ranchers who trap them to turn them loose inside the hunting ranch. Crazy but it works, they all stay booked up and make money. We have several places around the county and they all have a lot of hogs. Mostly hunted with dogs on horseback. The hogs are deep in the brush in the creek bottoms so it takes a dog to go find them. Other than those 2 ways, they are hard to get a shot at out in the open unless its night time. They will turn over 15 acres a night ripping and tearing up everything. Good bait to use is corn with diesel poured on it. Crazy to think that but it works, they love it.

I would try the corn with diesel, but how about harming the cattle. That would be my concern with the corn/diesel.

Never done any hog huntin'. I have some friends going to Texas in a couple weeks to do some. Sounds like they are a PITA for farmers. We don't have any up here in Mn. But I heard a guy from Wisconsin got caught by the DNR releasing some he trapped down south. BIG TROUBLE!
Does sound like fun, I will have to see how their hunt goes.

Thanks for the advice. Traps arent possible since I live about 150 miles from the place and only get out there a few times a month.

For those wanting to hunt the place, go ahead and sit outside your house for a few hours tonight looking at the dark tree line. Thats what hunting wild hogs is like, and you dont need to make a trip to Texas to experience this. Unfortunately, the hunting places that guarantee you will kill a hog make it seem like they just stand around waiting to get shot. In the wild, they show up when they want, and you will see more darkness than hogs. If you have someone on property to maintain the bait and learns the hog habbits of that area, it makes hunting a lot more predictable.

I will be oput there tomorrow night and we will see what shows up...

A helicopter and a couple of AR 15's are about the most <span style="text-decoration: underline">effective </span> thing in controlling numbers of hogs, though it's more expensive. Of course it's not going to work on a 30 acre pasture, the bigger the better.

Price runs around $400 hr and includes helicopter, pilot, shooter and ammo(within reason)

I had a buddy that did a ton of construction work at Ft. Riley and he told me the legend there was that about a decade ago, a new general on base went down near the river to run his prize bird dogs.

Apparently, they got into a herd of pigs and got tore up pretty badly. The general was pissed out of his mind and ordered the pigs off the base.

Word on the street is that Apache and Blackhawk gunships at night are the most effective way to control the pig population.

Have access to anything like that?

They breed four times a year, have no known predators and have a roaming radius of about 30 miles. They are hard to find, much less kill. Texas A&M is working on a feed that would sterilize them...so far it sterilizes everything else that eats it as well. FDA won't let them release it.

We tried traps one year and got about 50 hogs. They are smart and learned that traps are bad and haven't come to them since.

My cameras last year (09) showed them coming out about 4AM and 8PM. Get a feeder with a light and wait them out...

Note : around here it is known that the hog dog folks will do a catch, get paid and release not far down the road. Keeps the business moving. Hunters killing the sows and al sizes is your best chance to date. traps do not work well for long. it is a problem best dealt with early and thoroughly.

If you can control the liability/ exposure and control the hunters, the best thing is to try to kill as many as possible hunting at night friends have pics of and I have seen large groups; we were bow hunting so it is slow : one at a time knocked out perhaps two or three a night with a few hunters.
Feeders, timers for night dropping small lights or low light equipment and get your group to kill as many as possible; you can use the carcasses for predator bait or burn them .
they are a problem that ruins the chance of any other animal being on the property..
on the archery sites they usually post a few forum hunts and get them knocked off deer country etc that way.. I could get yhou in touch with the folks that shoot them for sport with bows, etc. my e mail is [email protected] if you think that you are interested in folks that know hog hunting in an out cause they do it all year long.

buddy up network with the folks who do it all the time; feed very consistently and work the trails back to the fence line, that is the escape route for scared and wounded, in open country like texas they will often run the same escape route from danger repeatedly, need a shooter there and along some of the major trails put feeders and pop up blinds...get em used to it and invest in the corn and any thing you can bring as slop from the local markets etc. to save outlay.. charge a small fee for some fun slaughter you may re cycle the meat into more hog slop.. that I am unsure of, cause the group I hunt with is into archery but it does not curb the population.
I will say that once you get em coming in, with a weapon capable of firing more than one shot and with silencers, you can likely take a bunch out before they clue into you and they forget pretty fast.. when there is a big bunch they raise a ruckus and some run off squealing anyway, so dead drop is startling while run off squealing is not as much so... you better deal with it is all I can advise, quickly and with a heavy hand, you will not succeed in running them off nor in extermination, but you will be able to reduce the numbers .. some..and do not mind killing the small and the large, the small are more edible the largest are not as much so and a pain to fool with.. I am not trying to get to go shoot hogs, I suggest a forum hunt, a group of locals, a bow hunt group... any kind of hog killers that will put in some time and contribute to the corn costs...
again network with the folks that do it all the time... I know folks who do it every weekend most weeks.. who are huntng two places at least in texas one very near the border around falfurrias and the other a few hours inland..
