Gunsmithing Homemade barrel vise and action wrench?

Re: Homemade barrel vise and action wrench?

I made these about 25 or so years ago, they work quite well. The wrench is about 2 ft long, one end is set up for Winchesters, Mausers and simular flat bottom actions. The other end was milled to fit Remingtons, It slides into the action. Again works great, I haven't mared any actions yet. And then the barrel vise. Its an oversize hole that I made bronze bushings for differant barrels. For added grip, I rap the barrel in 400-600 grit emery cloth and tighten the puppy down. The emery cloth dosnt mare the barrel near as much as it gets mared when it slips.

What I do, (and I'm sure I'll catch flack but it works for me) is to tighten up the barrel as tight as possible, then wack the wrench with a heavy hammer. It works for me better then a cheater bar which will always slip at some time or other.

(The "Remington" side of the wrench looks burred, I did that on some rusted piece of barreled action several years ago that took a lot of wacking, but it still works)

Re: Homemade barrel vise and action wrench?

do you have a steel yard close to you? start there. two bars of 1"x3" flat stock about 4"-5" long would be a good start, maybe 1.5" thick. then take these pictures to a machine shop and see if they can duplicate the cuts. look at the wheeler site for better pictures. but if you end up paying a place for all the machine work, you will be close to the price of just buying a wrench from wheeler. you gotta drill holes and find grade 8 nuts & bolts. fine threads are best, but coarse will do. you need a length of brass or aluminum to protect the action from the steel of the vise. if you have to buy all this stuff and have it milled and drilled, its gonna cost you.my local shop charges about $30-$40 an hour

and also try a search. a guy posted detailed drawings with specs on here for a wrench.

Re: Homemade barrel vise and action wrench?

I borrowed the idea from another manufacturer and made this one. The vise is 1x2 bar stock with 3/4 bolts. The action wrench is also 1x2 barstock and a 1" handle.
Good luck.

hey steel, at the base i see a hole. is that a pin to keep the threaded rods from turning as you torque it down? i havent yet done that on mine

unless you have access to machinery and don't value your time, it will be cheaper to buy one.

my neighbor has a nice sized drill pres i figure i could borrow and my dad says he knows a guy that does a lot of machining. what tools would i need?

I was going to weld them in but my friend suggested pinning them instead, just in case I'd ever have to replace one. Thought that was a dandy idea.

Re: Homemade barrel vise and action wrench?

i got lucky. the all thread just has a bolt on both ends. when i clamp mine down the bolts are resting on the bench and when i tighten it down, the bench stops the all thread from spinning and i dont have to worry about welding or pinning it so far. hell its a single use item at most anyway.

I started out making action wrenches for flat bottomed receivers per an old MacFarland's gunsmithing book.

I made some for friends.
I ran out of 2x2 steel, and made one from 1.5" round steel.
I had to inlet it.
It worked much better.
I then realized that the force on top, the force on the bottom and the bolts must all be in the same plane, or there will be a bind on the bolts that causes the bolts to be hard to turn, get beat up, and the receiver gets marred.

If you scroll back up in this thread and look at the pic posted by kraigWY, you will see one done right. Mill a relief cut so the recoil lug can slide up inside the wrench.

For getting old Rem700 barrels off the round receivers, I just make two barrel vises, one mounted to the bench, one on the end of a cheater bar.

For Sav110 in the field switch barrels on round receivers, I make two barrel vises, each on the end of a cheater bar.

i think everybody is trying to politely say that if you dont know what tools you need, you may be over your head. take these pics to your dads buddy and see if he can make it for you for less than $75. and if you look at the one i made, i used wood blocks to clamp the barrel and/or the receiver depending on my application and need. $20 total + $8 for the blocks. look at these videos...

again, not to be a dick, but if you cant look at the item and know how its made, it may be beyond you at this time. the hole you will need to drill for the receiver is bigger than most people have bits for so thats automatically a trip to a machine shop. i used 5/8"s all thread. its what i had, it was free. your grade 8 nuts & bolts are going to cost a bit too. research the steel costs, read my thread for cheap steel tips, do the math and see if its going to be easier to buy this stuff. then think about how many times you are going to use it. a smith might be easier and cheaper. not trying to discourage you at all, but the guys in this thread had all the tools and stuff and time and skill to whip this out. you dont. thats going to affect the costs.
