Gents, I was wondering what your opinions are of the single stage Hornaday reloader kit. The link to it is here: http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=749997 I have been researching what people seem to like and most say that the electronic scales are the way to go. Would I be better off trying to piece a "kit" together or buying something like this? Hornaday also is offering 500 free bullets with the purchase of this kit, that in itself would be about 150 bucks worth of Amax rounds. Thoughts?

Re: Hornaday reloading kit

I bought the Hornady LNL progressive press back when they were having a sale on them for something like $350....awesome deal since it also came with 1000 Hornady XTP bullets..

If you were to buy this stuff piece by piece.....

Hornady Single Stage press: $130
Hornady Powder Dispenser: $65
Digital scale: $30 (probably)
Powder trickler: $10 (probably)
Hornady #7 Manual: $30
Hornady Primer tool $30 (probably)

Just looking at this, it would add up to around $300 if bought separately, & I didn't even factor in some of the smaller items included in the package deal....

Yeah, it's probably a good buy.

Re: Hornaday reloading kit

Are Amax's available on the deal? The only kit that's a <span style="font-style: italic">good buy</span> is the RCBS RockChucker kit, but only if you can use everything in it; I question the need for the powder measure in that kit unless you're not real meticulous about consistent powder charges or shoot pistol.

I recommend individual pieces rather than making price compromises.

Re: Hornaday reloading kit

I was not aware the Amax rounds werent included, which sucks! I will look into the rockchucker kit. Im just trying to avoid having a bunch of junk I will have to upgrade right away because I hate it. It would probably be better for me to buy a few things at a time anyways.

Re: Hornaday reloading kit

Get ahold of a Sinclair catalog; they're free for the asking. It will show the best equipment and accessories available. Things like the Satern funnels and fitted loading blocks are well worth the little extra they cost.

Do you need a powder measure? They don't work well with stick powders. A good beam scale (RCBS 502, Redding or Dillon) and a set of Lee dippers are perfectly accurate with a trickler (Redding) or alternate technique. If your reloading volume is sufficient and the budget allows, the RCBS ChargeMaster Combo is becoming the new standard.

Choose your primer seating tool. There are many different styles, but the hand-held tools are the most popular. I use the Lee AutoPrime II press-mounted tool (it requires work to function properly).

The Lyman VLD inside chamfer tool is very popular. RCBS makes a similar one. Sinclair has the carbide grinding-tool bit with a handle. A tool supply will have a similar tool-steel unit also. The outside burr will have to be removed from the case as well.

The Wilson case trimmer is the nicest manual trimmer available. The inexpensive Lee trimmer is very popular and will serve.

A caliper (<span style="font-style: italic">made in China</span> will suffice) is a necessity. Imperial and Hornady Unique are superior to pad lubes. There are many other types of tools to suit your needs.

Forster and Redding have the better presses. Choose to suit your needs, preference and budget.

Nowhere in this list has <span style="font-style: italic">kit</span> been mentioned, nor will you find this combination in one.

Re: Hornaday reloading kit

There's a list of the bullets available on the deal. The deal list is on Hornady's website. Amax are not included at all. The best deal on there are probably the 44mag or 10mm XTP bullets, there's also 100gr BTSP 6mm's and 150gr FMJ's in 30cal.

The press is well made and will do you just fine. Be prepared to wait a while for those bullets though, my shipping and handling check for the 1000 freebies was cashed 12 weeks ago. I still haven't seen them.

Re: Hornaday reloading kit

Joe, Thank you for the link, I have read it prior to this thread about 100 times but it always helps to go back and read it again!

Winchester, that was the sort of list i was looking for, since you cant get Amax or other 30 cal match bullets I will prolly pass on the Hornaday kit, I will likley start with a press and one of those RCBS case prep centers, that way I can at least prep brass and I can have my friend load the stuff until I can get what I need for powder. That chargemaster combo looks like the deal!
