Hornady 178 BTHP Match Bullets..

Tried searching, but didn't have much luck. How are these bullets working with hand loads? I have been shooting 178 AMAX with 45.1 RL15 for awhile, but midway was out of AMAX's so I ordered 300 of these. From what I have read they have a slightly higher BC and I read good things about the loaded rounds. Any first hand experience?

I tried them with 44g of varget in win brass and primers and they did ok at 1k but I still get better results from the 175smk's. Shot from a 700p. I havent tried the loaded superformance rounds!.

Here are some results of my load development for my GAP SCLE 23" barrel 11.25 twist

All shot at 100 yards. I tend to pull one in almost every group.

No signs of pressure with any of the loads.
I was using Wolf Primers and uniformed primer pockets.

I settled on 43.1 gr. for a 2x1000 F/TR match tomorrow. I will see how they perform and report my results.

Springer01, I haven't tried the 178 AMAX, so I can't compare the two. I have an order of Nosler 175 CC's coming, so I will try them out for comparison.

The 178 BTHP with 43.1 grains of RL-15 didn't work so well out of my rifle at 1K today. I am going to work up another load with Varget.

I run them over 45 grains of Varget and have been very happy with them.

BR2, 210m or WLR primers
Hornady, Win or BHA brass.
2.820" COAl
4 different .308s

44grns of Varget in factory Superformance brass that I dumped the powder out and dumped in 44grns of Varget and just reseated the bullet. No brass prep.

Shot 5 done the same way as above at 300 yards that 4 looked like that above and one was about an inch higher. These bullets will shoot. You just need to work up the load.

I am on the fence with these, has anyone weighed them for consistency? Also how do the bullet points look are they all uniform or all they different?

Thanks for the info excited to work up a load and see how they work I know AMAX shoots lights out on my APA built .308 out to 700 yards but the last two times I have been shooting out to 1000 yards I have had some issues. Could of been shooter error, wind was a bitch, but I want to try something different.

Thanks! I will work up a load with Varget next. I am running LC LR brass so I will start with 43 grains and work up from there.

Franky I don't weigh my bullets, I shoot them. That said the bullets tips are very consistent. Hornady has taken great care for this and I spoke to the production guys at SHOT about it. Their new AMP jacketing is very consistent as well. I think they have a winner in these bullets.

Hey thanks guys for the info will be interested to see how these do. The specs are really good, but mainly interested if these will be better than the Berger 175 VLDs at a 1000yds.

Got mine in today.. and like Rob I don't normally weigh my bullets. I did weigh 20 of these and found they are .1-.2 grains lighter than the AMAX I had. AMAX weighing right at 178 and these ranging from 177-176. And there was a .1-.2 grain variance that I didn't see in the 20 AMAX bullets I weighed. Tips are very consistent! Bullets look good.. guess the only thing left to do is see how they fly.

I have weighed about 1500 or so 308 A-Max bullets and I think the most I have ever seen was a .2gr variance.

I believe my brother-in-law said that they have to shoot a .250" 100yd test group every 10K bullets or something like that. He used to work on press row at Hornady.

Try them with RL-17 you get a pretty hefty velocity gain in the .308. They are shooting well for me, I am going to use them for F-TR this year.

In the same boat here.. Im thinking that's what I'm gonna do. Drop them over 45.1 of RL-15 that I use for my 178 amax and shoot it.

Just picked up 200 of these w/Win brass. Gonna run over RL15 and fgmm lr primers.

Will be loading with Forster coax press and dies while a knowledgeable friend makes sure I don't bugger it up. Will be pushing through a factory ltr that's been skim bedded. Gonna try them at Raton for the Sporting rifle match. I suspect it will be more Indian than bow.

Loaded 15 rounds of these over my AMAX pet load of 45.1 of RL-15, Lapua brass and BR2 primers seated .010 off the lands. Accuracy seemed to be on par with the AMAX, shot about .2/10 mil lower at 100 yards. I am gonna have to lower my charge weight, bold lift was a little stiff and saw clear ejector swipes. Gonna work up some lighter loads and I'll report back but so far so good.

Here's another group from that same day at 300 yards with the 178 BTHPs. Loads made the same way as above in just pulling the bullets, dumping the Superformance powder and refiling case with 44grns of Varget so maybe slightly differing neck tension sent the one round about an inch high. That's a 5 shot group.

I have been thinking of doing this for awhile. I've got a ton of the factory loads but they shoot like crap in my bolt and my semi. I posted them for sale last week at the range but no one seems to want them.

Was your powder all stuck together? I just pulled 20 rounds and I had to poke the powder out.

The brass in the neck seems very thin. Don't think I have ever noticed that either.

Nope. It poured right out but I use an inertia hammer type bullet puller so it might have banged it loose.

I didn't see any difference in the necks between those loads and the standard 168 AMAX loads I shoot. I use a .332 bushing to give .002" of neck tension.

OK maybe that's it, I use a collet puller. I guess the Hornady brass has thinner necks than the FGMM and LC brass that I have been using.

I'm going to load them up tonight and try them tomorrow. How were you seating them? Jumping? Jammed?

Yes they are thinner than LC or Fed. They are closer to Win.

I was loading them .020" off the lands. Seems like a good spot.

I bought some of them and that is my same load give or take (LC brass and CCI reg). They shoot just like the amax for me. Didn't chrono them as it started to rain had to quit.

Tried to get this combo to work for twe weeks, my bolt gun hated these bullets seated to mag length. Was Getting about 1.5 moa at 300 yds. I tried changing the seating depth, different primers, and even a powder switch. Nothing worked. I was really bummed to, cause these bullets are $10 less per box than the Berger 185's my rifle shoots really well.

I read this somewhere else and they said they performed better at the lands then mag lenght. I'm loading these just for longrange so single loading in the lands will be fine if that's what it takes. I'll see soon enough.

I put them on top of 41.3gr of 4064 and they're only pushing ~2575


I just ran them at a class this weekend and my dope at 1k was a whopping 46MOA


anyone have an accurate BC on these? I couldn't (and still can't) get anything to line up anywhere near close

Cool, I was hoping to get over 2800, which I think should be doable for me. I have a 30" barrel and Barnard P action. Were you seeing any pressure signs at 44gr? I'm using Lapua brass instead of Hornady.

No pressure. Lapua and Hornady should be close in internal capacity. Start around 43.5grns and work up.
