Hornady concentricity tool

Re: Hornady concentricity tool

I bought one a year or so ago. I like it. I made one using angle and roller bearings and then bought one of these and they give similar readings, but the Hornady allows you to bend and fix the runout. I have no problem getting my ammo within .0015 TIR.

Re: Hornady concentricity tool

Well, I've got one. But only 4 or 5 of every 50 reloads reads anything over .001". Always dial those back to within .001". Not sure if those would have been fliers or not. That said, I no longer get ANY fliers in my handloads, minus cold bore, but even that has been minimized to less than an inch shift at 100 yards. I've never done any testing to shoot 50 ran through the tool and 50 not. But before I purchased the tool, there would still be a flier now and again. I guess with out any substantial testing, the groups have tightened. Would I purchase it again? Probably not. Am I glad I have it? Sure.

Re: Hornady concentricity tool

I had one, buy a Sinclair the readings it gives are accurite, when it read zero, the Hornady read .003, make the case read zero on the Hornady and the Sinclair read .003, also the Sinclair unit can be used to measure cases at each step of the reloading process, this will help you figure out where the runout is being introduced so steps can be taken to reduce it to hopefully zero.

Re: Hornady concentricity tool

My take is, concentricity qauge is just that.it lets you know where your at.im not tryin to straighten,im tryin to eliminate whats causing the problem

Re: Hornady concentricity tool

The whole concept of this tool baffles me, or at least the part about how the tool 'fixes' things. It seems to me that not only does it not fix your runout problem, it creates even more problems.

What happens to neck tension when you start bending the bullet in the neck by cranking down on the adjustment screw? It's sure not equal around or along the neck anymore. The bullet may not even be touching all of the neck anymore. What's that going to do to consistent ignition and velocity? By forcing the bullet to move laterally (or at least the part getting hit by the adjustment screw), you are actually bending parts of the neck wall.

What if your runout is coming from a variation in neck wall thickness that shows up on the bullet because no expander was used (like with most bushing dies)? All the bending in the world isn't going to fix that. All you're going to do in that case is make one point along the bullet (the point where the indicator is resting) show to be concentric while the whole bullet is cock-eyed in relation to the neck (and presumably the bore).

I can't picture a scenario where this tool could help.
