Hornady Match 6.5 Creedmoor powder?

Just curious if anyone knows what powder Hornady uses in the 147 gr eld match 6.5 Creed ammo? It’s over-pressured in my RPR and I have too much to just set on the shelf. I pulled a few apart to weigh the charge and reduce it. Four of the five weighed 44.3 and the last was 43.8. I reduced two to 43.5 and test fired those two, the hard eject was gone but both flattened the primers. Temperature was 53. Any info is appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I'd contact Hornady to see if they had a hot batch go out.

That being said, what is loaded in factory ammunition is typically not canister grade powder that is available to reloaders. It's usually a blend of industry available powders to meet a desired pressure/velocity.

I thought the same thing so I fired one each from three different lots and all produced the same signs. I was hoping to use factory ammo as I’ve been searching for powder for months, I’d rather not use what I have unless I can replace it. They did however shoot fantastic, I fired 3groups for 9 total rounds and the biggest group @100 was the three from different lots at .44.

Factory rifles need to be able to handle factory ammunition.... That's why they have industry standards that both have to comply with. If you are definitely having pressure issues then something is out of spec, and if 3 different lots all had excessive pressure then it is probably the rifle. Is the rifle new?

Are you sure that they are over pressure?? Can you chronograph a few? Primers are very easy to interpret wrong.... and some are just soft.

Factory ammo companies make mistakes- and I've had some hot loads,- but they didn't span different lots and the company wanted to exchange them.

That powder is a non canister powder not available to handloaders so nothing to compare it to in manuals.

Lets see a pic of the primers. Also have you measured your OAL to the lands? Sounds like an issue that has happened in the past to RPRs and Savage rifles that have a short freebore less than SAAMI and the rounds are jammed into the lands.

This happened to me but in 6CM. I suppose it's possible in other chamberings.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for all the replies so quick, sorry for the delayed response. I measured the headspace of the factory loaded cases at 1.554 at the fired cases were 1.558 using a Hornady comparator. As far as the distance to the rifling/free bore, I measured that using the bolt method (3.312) and the Hornady comparator and the factory loads (3.257) have a .055 jump to the rifling. I’ll throw some pictures of the powder and the difference between the measured case/bullet and the factory loaded one on here. I guess they’re just hot loads. Thanks everyone!

I also have a picture of the two primers I reduced the load in next to a unfired one, and like I said the hard bolt eject was completely gone with these two.
