ive been reloading a fair while for .308 s mostly 168-75 smk s around the 44g varget mark. while helping out on a safety course (no reloads) i was given a couple of boxes of the hornady tap 168g to try (red box with match brass), this stuff shot fantastic for factory ammo, so as every other reloader i set about copying it with varget. i pulled a couple of heads and they both contained 45.2g stick powder.i tried to buy a couple of boxes ( black box silver cased couldnt get the red) despite being told it was the same, it shot poorly, pulled a couple of their heads 44.1, 44.3 g stick powder. does any one know whats in the match grade ammo, i l00ked up a couple of old threads, but i think they were about the lower grade.

You can set out to "rebuild to factory specs" just about any ammo, but the reality is to build a load that fits your gun. Use whatever components you want, but build one that shoots good out of your rifle.

You can experiment with:
* Different primers (they are not all created equal)
* Different Powders (Same)
* Different powder loads
* Different seating depths
* Different brass (should not change from firing to firing, the difference in results may be to differing neck tensions)

Hornady (and most others as well) are very good about answering your questions on their loads.

Give them a call or send an email and thy will pretty much tell you exactly what they use and their load specs and more.

I'm reloading my .308 Win brass with their 168g A-Max and after a brief call they gave me their factory load specs and even gave me their closest estimation for the IMR 4320 powder that I prefer.
