Rifle Scopes Horus reticle and elevation adjustment

I've seen a few threads on the HDMR about elevation travel. Folks have commented that if only the HDMR had 10mils per revolution instead of 5, that it would be the perfect scope. I'm just curious why elevation adjustment matters so much with a reticle that is designed for using hold overs and hold offs?

Most people still dial and don't use hold overs even though they have reticles that perfect for doing so.

I'd guess its been ingrained into them, or they've never taken a class, or never had a situation where they HAD to use the hold overs.

I've seen lots of people who still dial wind when doing basic shooting. I never do that...if I had a cover that could go over my windage I would cap it forever since I always use holds for wind.

For convenience and versitility mostly.

The 10 mil knobs are just a conveience compared to 5 mil knobs.Much less likely to end up a rev off by accident.I watched someone at a recent comp do that on his Leupold and I'd be lying if said I hadn't done it before.Get into the habbit of resetting the knob back to zero as soon as you are done with each stage or distance and there will be no problems.

Or for instance if you are shooting F class at 1000Y or any specific distance for a length of time.You'd just want to dial and use the main crosshair.One can still get confused and pic the wrong hash mark in the Horus reticle.Done that too.

Or dialing for wind if wanted.

To answer your question,sometimes you just wanna dial even when you have a Horus ret.

I like the Horus reticle for holdovers when I'm out having fun shooting st steel at various distances.It's quick! If I wanted to I could shoot a dot drill at 100Y then engage a steel a mile away 2 seconds later.

I especially appreciate the reticle when I'm required to shoot a stage at a match with holdovers only under a time limit.

Just to be clear one doesn't have to have a H reticle for holdovers.Any reticle with hash marks can be used successfully.The advantage to a Horus reticle is being able to easily distinguish 1 click or .1 mil anywhere in the grid.

I understand all that as I am familiar with using the Horus. I was just trying to correlate why it was so important to have the ability to dial 10 mils in one revolution for a reticle that was designed to eliminate the need to dial.

I've been running a scope with the Horus Ret. since 2004 and you want to be able to dial and use holdovers.

But the 10mils per rev is purely a convenience issue, as most comp shooter can get to a 1k shot with in 10mil.

But as Terry C. mentioned in another thread spacing can be come an issue.

Only dialing or only holding over is like only shooting strong side, you have to be proficient at strong and support....dialing and holding over/under.

While in theory a 10 mil/rev knob is nice, in actuality it puts the hashmarks so close together I have a hard time distinguishing them....... sucks to get older......

To my eyes and fingers, I prefer the wider spacing of 5mil/rev.
