Looking at restocking my 700 SPS Tactical and the new stock is going to make it a bit heavier. Id like to keep using the gun for coyote hunting untill i can afford an AR but with my current paracord sling I wont be taking many long hikes.

Theres a guy close to me that sells back pack style slings (slings that have two shoulder straps instead of one) but im just curious what you guys use

Re: How do you guys pack your heavy rifles?

Just ordered an elberstock tailhook most pics online only show a bow.
They can carry a rifle as well plan to use it hunting coyotes, looks like you can fit your calls, water, a decoy if you use it, and a bit to eat in it easy enough.

Re: How do you guys pack your heavy rifles?

I too am pandering this. Skinney you use a big Eberle while coyote hunting? What if you come up on one while walking in and need to access rifle real quick?

I too don't need a big pack with while coyote hunting. I do have an Eagle case with backpack straps that would work great. But then I'm not going to get to the rifle real quick if I need to. Plus I'd think the zippers would be a bad deal in the field. I'm thinking a sling like you described may be the best option. But I'm also curious to see what others use.

Re: How do you guys pack your heavy rifles?

I have a 15 lb. rifle and have flushcups installed on the opposite side of the bolt and use a TAB elite sling to carry it around. The sling is pretty thick coming in around 1.5" or more makes it easier to carry a rifle slung on my back. Also it has a loop to help with positional shooting. Great sling IMHO.

Re: How do you guys pack your heavy rifles?

If the weather is bad or if we're going on a long trip where I might need some stuff that I can't carry on my person, I take my drag bag with the shoulder straps. Ammo, gear, etc. All in one place.
I built my own double shoulder sling and I highly recommend them. If you have the means, build your own, they aren't hard. Mine has ergonomically designed strap pads that aren't the goofy square or strait pad. They wrap around my shoulders and under my arm pits and they've got quick release buckles and molle webs on the front for stuff like my lens pen and Caldwell wind wizard.
If you don't have the means to build your own, consider the Outlaw or TABs Biathalon. It's easily the most comfortable way (and probably the safest way) to carry a heavy rifle in unpredictable field conditions. It is NOT a QUICK DRAW, SHOOT ON THE MOVE, SLING, but if you're not calling often enough or well enough to call in a coyote before you scare him up, you should work on your calling technique first...or go with a buddy with a lighter gun.

Mine comes in at around 16-17 lbs loaded with the can.

Re: How do you guys pack your heavy rifles?

I dont plan on quickly drawing my gun but i dont want it in a pack that i must remove to get my gun out. where i hunt you may just pop up on any ridge top and come face to face with something, so its nice to be able to get the gun just incase you do come up on one. If the eberlestock (spelling?) wasnt so much they look pretty good but the price just in my case isnt worth it.

ya its pretty much all i use while coyote hunting, keeps my caller, camera, ammo, roid hood, overwhites, nomad, LRF, xtra mags... and more, i can single handed pull out my Armalite Super SASS, while the pack is on, its quick, and smooth.

Re: How do you guys pack your heavy rifles?

My coyote kit weighs 37.4 pounds and is incorporated into a modified dragbag. The rifle alone(boltgun)weighs 17.2 pounds. Inside contents include, rear bag with range card attatched, remote for the call, camera, tripod, hand calls, drag rope, knife, GPS, note pad and pen, reading glasses(yes, I'm over 50...grin!) Nabuto sample packs, spare batteries, mildot master, lense cleaning kit, spare AI mag with 5 rounds in it, 12 rounds of pistol ammo, pair of leather gloves, bottle of water, 2 Cliff bars. On my belt goes my sidearm, cartridge carrier with 5 rounds(rifle). Around my neck is my Vector 21. Attatched to the outside of the pack is my electronic call.

I lose an occasional coyote while walking into a call setup, but a guy would be surprised how fast you can get unloaded and make a shot when you have to....especially with a rifle you can shoot long with.

Re: How do you guys pack your heavy rifles?

PGS,
just a thought... but you might make a few xtra $$$ if you marketed your custom "modified" drag bag... BTW, looks alot like my pile i tote when calling.

My CRF 450 is one of my "modes of travel" when its dry. I lowered the shoulder straps so the bag rides on top of the seat while still on my back. I dont get too crazy on the bike when I'm using it for hunting. Way too much valuable gear to chance taking a header....especially the Vector.

Re: How do you guys pack your heavy rifles?

Do you find it hard to keep the bike up with the extra weight on? currently ive got an ar-15 case that i use to hold my bolt gun then i use a series of straps and tie down and tie it too my snowboarding back pack. It works and a total of 6 straps would all have to break at one time before i would loose my gun but it makes me and the bike a bit tippy because it gets top heavy.

Im going to look into those tab slings a bit more and also check out those flush cups because id imagine with a biathlon sling and just regular sling studs the trigger guard and possibly the bipod is going to like poking you isnt it?

Re: How do you guys pack your heavy rifles?

It is more difficult, but I'm never in a hurry and just kind of put around nice and slow. At least I haven't cratered yet...key word is yet.....grin!

Re: How do you guys pack your heavy rifles?

I use an eberlestock phantom most of the time. Because of the way that model is built, I can backpack the gun scabbard and the pack either together or either one individually. The scabbard works pretty good without the pack on it, but I might get a biathlon sling just for those times when i'm out riding/hiking and want faster access to the gun. I dig that setup in the pics.

Re: How do you guys pack your heavy rifles?

i'm a high speed low drag kind of guy,......way too much shit to schlepp,,,,,under the six layers of clothing, i actually went commando ...just to save the weight, just sayin!

first off ....you must be a real sniper
second.....do not attempt this procedure if you own a rifle stock that will float

and third, seek professional help

Re: How do you guys pack your heavy rifles?

Oh im a true sniper i even have the counter sniper scope with mil dots in my mil dots so that i can range while i range. Mounted it on my spring powered bolt action air soft gun. I couldnt afford a Harris so i went with a $5 nock off from ebay.

No but seriously, i found a thread on the forum here on step by step how to install them but im not sure if i could bring myself to taking a drill to my stock. Im not even brave enough to spray paint my old 10/22 stock.

LOL, i've been doing that for years now!!! video... very close.

Re: How do you guys pack your heavy rifles?

I've got Timberbutte outdoors "outlaw" backpack slings on all my guns now. Gary's a great guy in Idaho building these slings by hand. If you want something special added on, he'll do it for a very reasonable charge.

I now own 11 of these slings and they are the ducks nuts.

Re: How do you guys pack your heavy rifles?

Noobie, My wife has one of the Outlaw slings and she likes it, she got it for free for modeling the sling for a website.
I prefer my Eberlestock though...

Re: How do you guys pack your heavy rifles?

I run the Kifaru gunslinger. I find with a rifle under 8lbs I load as normal but if I carry my heavy .243 (14ish lbs) I shift some of my pack load to the opposite side and everything balances nicely.
