I know it carries it pretty far but what's your experience? I dont want a bunch of guesses here, I'm looking for real experience where you know you were winded and at what distance. It's always been something I wondered about.

In Nov while Deer hunting in San Diego a buddy and I were hiking out to our spot. Wind was to our backs in one section of the hike but it would be right for the spot we were trying to get to. We came over the first hill and spotted 2 deer on the next hill. They were bedded down facing away from us and our wind was blowing right to them. We knew we didnt have much time, I ranged them at 225yds as my buddy was setting up his shot. Right then the deer stood up, turned and looked straight towards us, then got the heck out of there.

Just 2 weeks ago I had my dog with me while coyote calling. I was sitting against a fence post and had the dog sitting next to me. Wind was crossing from behind me left to right. Dog is pretty calm while I call til she sees or smells something. After a few minutes she perks up and starts sniffing the air. She turns around facing the wind and locks her eyes on something. I slowly turn to look and there is a yote on top of a hill back there 200yds away just sitting there. Pretty proud of my dog for winding that yote from 200yds.

Another time while pig hunting we were camped about 600 or 700yds from a dead cow. Every now and then the wind would shift and we could smell that thing.

I've got video footage of a coyote smelling us @ over 600yds with a +-2mph wind... now just think, if you can smell death @ 1/2 a mile, and a dog can smell 100X better than you, well... you get the idea.

Read an article that claims a male coyote etc can smell a bitch in heat at around 2 miles. Vultures can smell a dead carcass at 10 miles or so.

Somewhere I read also that a bloodhound can smell dead skin tissue in the air that has been several weeks since the person etc was there.

200yds for a dog or yote tain't even a challenge
