How many rounds do you average in a session?

Doing a little ammo planning. I know when I'm ripping a gasser on steel it's hilarious we can all go through 200 rounds a piece like walking to the rest room....poof gone. Being new to bench/LR what is a normal day of popping steel for you at distance with a bolt? 100 rounds?

I've got 1,200 rounds of my fav ammo, but if 100 is the norm that's 12 trips and I'm out and I will be going to the LR joint a lot more than once a month. I keep thinking this sales tax on ammo is gonna hit in FL at some point and that's a bummer on the ammo price figured I may as well pile it high.

It all depends on your purpose. I’ve gone to the range and fired 2 rounds before.

I generally don’t fire more than 50 unless it’s a competition.

Average about one shot every 4 minutes usually to keep the barrel a nice consistent not-too-hot temp most of the year because Im always testing something. Winter Ill speed the pace up a bit.
8x3 plus a sighter is 25.
10x3 plus a sighter is 31.
8x4 plus sighter is 33.
5x5 plus sighter is 26
25 of the same thing is my typical day for doping the rifle etc.

Sometimes when Im just kicking the shit looking to pass some time Ill shoot up to 50 of something, usually 223, when Im just plinking for the fun of it.

Totally nailed it. Not saying I may not get really into this at some point with reloading etc. For starters though it's about the core of our group just enjoy benig able to shoot past 525 yards now, learning our way down range/wind reads etc and smacking steel laughing all the way. I don't envision gasser type volume, but who knows I've never shot a bolt gun that much. I do know my 6.5 with a can feels like a bb gun though I've done a couple of 100-120 round days felt like nothing, but that was just excitement of new rifle so not sure if that will be the norm or not.

About 30-50 rounds per square range trip typically shooting paper at 100, 200, and 600 yards.

Closer to 100, perhaps 125 rounds per day of 6.5 CM and .308 if we've bothered to go out and set up steel targets on government land at distances ranging anywhere from 150 - 1200 meters. Got to shoot more on these fun days! Usually turn these into two day trips.

If you go to the range with a training purpose, and incorporate more than just live fire into your training, you will find that you burn less ammo, your barrel will last for more total rounds and you will actually accomplish some training!

I do barricade drills without live fire often, only dry firing. Practice going from staged to dry fire on the first target for time, transitioning between positions for time. Run a whole stage dry for time.

Work on your positions.

Once you have it down dry, go hot and practice how to mitigate recoil while implementing what you’ve developed during your dry runs.

In my opinion, the only thing that shooting a stage hot does over shooting it dry is let you see the effects of your practice of wind reading and recoil mitigation.

Of course some things REQUIRE being hot to practice effectively, such as free recoil.

Since I'm new to long range shooting, and recently found out about a range with 100's of steel targets from 100-900 yards I seem to just keep shooting for hours having fun, as I've never done this before.
I assume the more practice the better, if I'm not tired and am still able to fundamentaly shoot correct?

If im shooting out in the field behind my house sometimes its just a couple 5x5’s with the AR or the bolt guns.. when i travel and shoot 1,000 yards its usually 60-80 in the bolt gun and maybe 50-60 out of the AR... i mainly shoot the AR just out to 600-700 yards but with the bolt guns i usually run a couple rounds at every distance between 300-1,000 yards just checking for differences in dope due to weather and whatnot and then the rest is spent on an 8” plate at 800 and a 10”x10” at 1,000 when its up.

I think wheres-waldo said it best. Dry fire is where it’s at but live fire is there to help you validate what you’ve been practicing. I fire about 30 rounds a session just to see how the recoil feels in a certain position or two and then go back to dry firing to nail it down or refine it and then repeat the process over and over. At least that’s where I’m at.

4 boxes of 20 plus 6 mags with 10 each 308 /224/ should be a nice day 100 yards - 400 yards or 400 - 600 yards mostly depending on which we can get to that day 223 same as above usualy only out to 100 I only have a red dot on it . the 22's usually 4 mags of 10 + 2 or 3 box of 50 maybe .
handguns vary 9mm 4 mags 10 each pluss 2 to 3 boxes of 50 , 357 a lot less 24 to 48 rounds , 38 swc maybe 12 shots to 24 rounds , and 22 usualy only 4 mags with 10 shots each gun that all depends on who comes into the range if its empty then we stay longer than when its packed . sometimes less seldom more . If we get that much shooting in on Friday and Saturday to me its been a good week so in all 300 rifles and like 302 pistols

Usually 50 rounds per bolt rifle, two rifles per trip. One set of 50 is likely some form of load development or experimentation. I try to get more positional and offhand work with the hunting rifle as we scoot towards the fall.

Unless its the occasional trip to a ranch or other fun, non square range site, in which case, 4 or 5 guns with whatever ammo is at hand (100 or more per rifle, plus pistol). Because part of the fun is sharing & watching friends giggle after launching a 500 grainer downrange.

I can dry fire at home, when i commit to a range day it is a couple hours drive. I shoot 75-100 rounds confirming dope and wind calls. The local range is only 100 yards i shot less sounds there, on paper, shooting groups, or dot drills, but still go through 40-60.

I don't pay attention to barrel temp, I have a 6.5cm with a bartlein heavy barrel. This past weekend I shoot 2 back to back mock stages with 10 shots each, 3 minutes rest and reset between. My barrel ir temp was 150 at the hottest point. Accuracy did not suffer.

I’m fortunate because I have access to a thousand yard range and shoot steel there at least once a week.

I bring at least 100 rounds for each rifle I’m shooting that day. I don’t always shoot all of it but I’d rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Every December/January I make a point to load at least 1200 rounds of 308 and every August I have to start loading in the middle of the week for the weekend.

I don't make it out as often as I'd like to, but it's a pretty complete rifle range to 1400 with lots of steel and props when I do.

Most often I shoot 75-150 223 rounds, of which 5-20 will be zero and Chrono, along with 50-100 Dasher, of which 10-30 will be zero, Chrono, and drop confirm.

I get the "work" of zeroing and confirming drops out of the way quick, so I can actually practice shooting.

I’m just getting into bolt gun shooting, so I don’t have an answer there. My current range trips are somewhat high volume. Indoor I usually 8 mags in the CZ Scorpion (240 rounds) and 7 mags in the Glock 45 (119 rounds) plus probably another 50-100 rounds shooting drills, this is twice per month. Outdoor range is usually 8 mags of 5.56 or 7.62x39 (240 rounds) and at least 10 mags from pistols (150 rounds) plus whatever else I may have brought. On the bolt gun front I plan on probably 100-200 rounds from my CZ452 and probably 40 rounds in the 6.5 Creedmoor, and some more if I bring the AR-10 in .308.

Precision Rifle: 10-20 rnds each checking dope/conditions out to 1000 yds. The remaining split between positional practice, dot drills, and KYL, depending on what I feel I need to work on. Guns are usually swapped between strings and allowed to cool. I stop when I feel shooter's fatigue setting in (just wasting ammo after that) and come back to it after a short rest.

AR/Pistol: Round count is more dependent on time available and drills. I'm not just dumping mags. Basic speed and mobility drills. (Contact drills, limited insertion, 3-Gun/IDPA mock ups, 5-1, box, Triple 6, etc.).

Some days it is just precision rifle, other days just AR/Pistol, and sometimes it is both. Due to my current schedule, range trips are not as frequent as I would like (2-4 times per month, less in winter), but they are usually an all day affair. Also dependent on who is coming along or range conditions/crowds.
