How many rounds/practice - what are good range exercises for new shooter?

I have never taken a class, nor have I ever done any of this professionally. That said the end goal must be stated first. What are you hoping to accomplish?

For me I can shoot out to 200+ yards in my yard. I never go to 'ranges' and I think the last time I paid anyone to shoot was at least 4 years ago and I only did that because it was indoors (and it was raining for a week or two straight). So with that in mind I never shoot more than say 50 rounds when I am shooting my carry pistol. That said 50 rounds x 2 to 3 times a week is a fairly normal schedule for me.

I have a method to my madness though. I think quality is more important than quantity. When I shoot those 50 rounds I go into it trying to make those rounds count. My focus is more on consistency.

Conversely I think people can easily 'over practice'. At that point it is no longer 'practice' though and goes more into burning up the ammo or blasting for giggles. Let's face it. Shooting is a lot of fun but it also can be expensive. It's easy to think you need to shoot 1000 rounds in a day to be one of the guys but I don't subscribe to that particularly when I am practicing for real. I have the equivalent to probably 15 to 20 cases of 9mm but I personally want to force myself to pay attention to what I am doing.

If I had to drive for an hour to go shoot or something like that my system would probably be very different.

Live and dryfire both have their purposes.

You can get all the practice you need @ 100yds. I’d personally do a 10:1 ratio on dryfire to live rounds.

If you did this and took 40 rounds to range, and did a build and break, you’d build a position and break trigger 440 times. That’s a ton of training.
