I'm looking at some RL22 loads, and it shows about 108% compression.... is that too much?

how much compression is too much where bullets aren't gonna seat right?

RL-17 is at 91%, so no compresssion, but I loose about 40 fps

There is also IMR7828SSC with 105% and i'm 30fps less with the lowest pressure (about 1K less than RL-22)

so how much compression is too much? is 8% compression too much?

Re: How much compression is too much?

some rounds its normal to get allot of compression ,it depends on your bullet and seating depth , rounds like .223 and 30-06 usually require some compression , rounds like the 45 colt typically dont

Re: How much compression is too much?

The compressed charge that produces too much pressure when fired is too much.

Sorry to be so vague... Let me give an example:

LC72 Match 308 brass holds 49.5gr Varget TAMPED. I have not had problems using that charge with a 155 Scenar. It is VERY compressed!

Re: How much compression is too much?

I see... It's going to a .30-06

So 6-8% isn't anything crazy... I was thinking doing with .001 tigther bushing to make tension .002 instead of .001 to hold the bullet bit better with the compressed load

Re: How much compression is too much?

Take what vlocities a computer program says with a grain of salt.

Fast that isnt accurate is no warm fuzzy.

I found RL-22 compressable but found some lots having high ES. Went with H4350, not quite as fast but the ES was alot lower and lot to lot very dependable.

That was a few years ago, things could have changed.

Re: How much compression is too much?

You can't really rely on Quickload numbers for that. You need to actually load up a round and see. A bit of crunch is ok, you're just breaking a few kernels. When you start mashing the kernels, then you're actually affecting the burn rate of the powder in a significant way.

Re: How much compression is too much?

Thanks guys...

Problem is I don't have any rl22 and I go buy some to realize I'm just turning the powder into mashed pieces, I just wasted 30 bux on powder.

Anyways, I think I'll go buy some IMR 7828 SSC. That thing looked good.

And I do take it with a grain of salt, but numbers are numbers...

Re: How much compression is too much?

I use a H1000 7WSM load that shows 105% compressed on Quickload, but when dropped through my 6" drop tube funnel does not go crunch at all.

Get a drop tube funnel. If that is not enough, then I have one more trick to help reduce the crunch factor. I turn on my tumbler, cover the top of the brass with my thumb, and then rest the bottom of the brass on the edge of the tumbler for about 30 seconds. when its done, I've reduced the fill by an additional percentage and can set without the crunch.
