How much is too much?

I'm on disability. No right collar bone. It's a long story. Point is, I've got lots of time on my hands. I put about 100 rounds through my rifle per week. Is that a lot?? I mean, I guess I can always get a new barrel installed after I'm done killing the one I have now. And I only stick a rod in there after about 500 rounds. My rifle is also known to be a pretty good one. How many rounds do you guys go through per week?? Just curious...

If you're asking about a 22lr barrel it will last hundreds of thousands of rounds of ammo. Cleaning it does more harm than shooting it. I do not clean my 22's until I see a lost of accuracy or if it's going to be stored for a long time. Shoot as much as you can and enjoy. I shoot several cases of 22's a year but I've got a couple dozen rifles so I can't tell you how many each gets shot per weekly or monthly basis. Donald

If your speaking of your HMR, think about moly fusion treating the barrel. I did it with the HM2 barrel i had on my 10/22. Its no joke. My groups shrunk a bit, and as long as you freshen up the treatment every so often, the bore sees no wear. Look it up, or go to rimfire central and ask about it. Its well worth the price and work.

As Don said....a 22lr barrel will last a LONG time. When I shoot mine I usually go through an entire brick since ammo is so cheap. Just shoot until acuracy starts to drop then give it a quick clean and shoot some more. It was kinda hard for me to not clean it after every time I shot like I do with all my other guns.

On the low side, a 22LR will last 50,000 rounds. More likely in the hundreds of thousands. I think Eley replaces their test barrels every 250K to 500K rounds.

BUT SBS is shooting a 17HMR. I imagine the 17 has a shorter barrel life than 22LR, but I bet it will still be substantially more than most centerfires.

As to how much a week... I usually put 30 - 70 rounds per session and do anywhere from 1 - 3 sessions per week. In a year, I am probably at about a case of ammo, which is 5,000 rounds. No signs of lost accuracy. I use solvent about every brick (500 rounds), otherwise, a dry patch or two after every range session, but sometimes I even skip that step.

Who needs a right collar bone anyway. Nothin' a little duct tape and some 550 cord can't fix.

If you can't fix it with duct tape, fuck it... It's broke. SmallBore, I'm not picking at you, I just like the quote. Regarding the original post, I don't shoot one rimfire in particular each week. If I take the 40X, being a single shot I'll go through about 100rds. Same goes with my CZ 452V. If I take one of the threaded 10/22's or my Ruger/TacSol MKII it's probably closer to 2-300 but that's more plinking then working on groups.

Wow. I didn't think they would even last as much as some of the figues you guys provided. Say it actually did wear out. Can you simply just get a new barrel?

For a 10/22? Oh ya, direct bolt on barrels are a dime a dozen for 10/22's

My round count is pretty erratic. Sometimes I will shoot 300 some times not even 50.
Each time I get to the range (50 mile round trip) There are a whole host of distractions.
As a former board member and active volenteer on a range with 2000 members there's always something, picking up trash, current building project, weeds.
As an instructor for the appleseed project I often give 1 on 1 half day instruction and get a few shots in with that.
Then as a bullet caster my goal is to always bring back as much lead as I brought to the range. If not more.
Round count for yesterday was 35 M-1 .30'06 cast bullet loads
fired before anyone else showed up. Then 100 .22 lr fired while bringing a lady shooter along the appleseed way, she fired about 200, and is just on the cusp of making riflewoman with a score of 203.
I had my hide targets and plenty of ammo in the car but did not get to shooting them.

On average maybe 50 rounds 22lr per week, 30 223 and 25 308. Sometimes double that along with some 1911 45. I mainly shoot rifle for now.

I'm really lucky the range is only 5 minutes from work and home so I get to go @ least 3 times a week and sometimes twice a day. I would guess 200 on a slow week and 500 or more.

You should easily be able to order one from Marlin. Maybe even Midway would be able to get one for you? Personally, I'd throw an e-mail Marlin's way if you're worried.

If your shoulder can stand a sandbag leaning against it behind the rifle butt, you've gone a long way toward taming the recoil. At least it's worth a try.

I have a 100 yard range at my house and typically shoot every day the weather allows using my 10/22 trainer.
I'll go through 100 rounds per session working on positional shooting and drills.
(I use 10, 10 round magazines that are preloaded so that I can just grab the rifle and go when I get home.)
Average round count per week is 500.
Minimum round count is 100.
After shooting this much over the past year, the results have really begun to show themselves in competition with my .308 bolt gun.

FWIW
I clean the bore about every 5,000 round and clean the action every 1,000 rounds.
I'm not concerned with barrel life at all as long as I'm gentle with the cleaning.

Shoot as much rimfire as you can and enjoy!
