How hard do I torque down the sight rings to my sight base? I'm using Leupold Mark 4 tactical rings and a Leupold one piece tactical long range base. They are going on a Remington 308.

I am also putting a barrel on my AR15 carbine. How hard do I torque the barrel to the upper? Do I torque the barrel with the bolt and bolt carrier in the upper to insure proper alignment with the barrel?

Re: How much torque?

Does anyone know the answer to how hard I torque my AR15 barrel to the upper, and do I torque it with the bolt and bolt carrier in the upper to make sure it is aligned with the barrel?

Re: How much torque?

There should be a slot, at the 12:00 position, in the threads where the barrel nut threads on the receiver. The stud on the barrel will fit into it and line up the barrel position. I usually make sure the nut is snug with an armorers wrench. Don't know a specific torque...

Re: How much torque?

If I remember correctly, GI specs were around 30-45ish ft-lbs for the nut - then you torque to the next gas hole, stick the tube through and you're GTG. However, and this really depends on your components, today's stuff can be torqued from anywhere between 30 and 80 ft-lbs. If you aren't sure which end of the spectrum you're at, I'd give the barrel manufacturer a call and get their thoughts........OR, just take to your local 'smith. It's a pretty quick job if you have the tools.
