If this question has been already answered then if you could point me that direction that would be great. I would like to build a ultra short barreled AR-15 that will be reliable.Using a gas system either pistol length or carbine length. But also would like to know the possibility on cutting down a OP-Rod in a gas piston system. Has anyone attempted this before if so I would like to know more detail. Just a curiosity.

You can go SHORT with an AR barrel (i.e. - 7" or so) if you do it right. I have used and prefer 10.5" or so unless you just REALLY need to go ultra-short.
As for piston systems...why bother hacking one up when companies make both pistol and carbine-length systems that will work with SBR AR-15's without modification:

Also, and this almost goes without saying, but...DON'T FORGET THAT YOU WILL NEED TO FOLLOW ALL NFA REQUIREMENTS FOR OWNERSHIP OF AN SBR UNLESS YOU BUILD IT AS A PISTOL AND YOU MEET THE LEGAL REQUIREMENTS OF A PISTOL!! Not worth the $250k fine and 10yrs in a federal pen!!

You can do pretty much anything you want.
4" M2 Corp upper.
4" Prototype Colt Canada (then Diemaco) upper (note shortened buffer tube).
The gas tube was just cut and wleded into a cutup gas block - the gas port was BIG (IIRC .125")

Although it can be done, I wouldn't go less than 7.5"... Even then, you see a pretty drastic effect on your ballistics. What twist and bullet weight do you plan on using?

less than 10.5 and more than reliability suffers - the gasses dont have enough time to burn down the barrel before the round is released in to the wild. Remember this round was designed for a 20 inch barrel, not a pistol barrel.

I've got a 10.5 that runs with and without a can. They (SBR's) are loud and if you run a can where eye pro because you are going get blow back. If you want piston driven go PWS. I've seen a 7.5 run like a scalded dog in full auto. (That is without a can.) Good luck!

Go with the advice that it is better to be silent and thought a fool than to post stupid shit and remove any doubt.
