I'm just getting into sniper competitions and I cant figure out the best way to carry 100+ rounds of ammo in my pack. I have 100 round hard cases but I feel like there has to be a better way because I dont want my ammo rattling around when I move from stage to stage.

Does anyone have gear suggestions on how they carry it?

If you pack has molle webbing Id suggest a couple of 3mag holders and put on your pack, then slide the box into the mag holder.

A buddy and I got some from Bridage Quartermasters years ago and they work wonders, I run 2 on my bag that will hold 100. Then I took and made a buttcuff that can slide on my arm and holds another 9 rounds, then the 5 on the stock pack, and an additional 4 rounds that I can move around on my rifle that are just velcroed on. I can carry 18 easilly with me and have easy access from stage to stage if needed, then 100 in my pack.

I have an Eagle chest rig for AK mags. Gonna carry my 308 in dat in da Federal ammo sleeves from the trash can. Works like a charm.

Here is another way to use the Red Tac ammo cards: this has saved my ass in a couple of man-on-man and several timed stages in competition, where DBM rifles are the norm.

One method is to see if you can obtain a "bridge clip" (usually included in a NATO 7.62 ammo/bandolier repack kit; AKA magazine charger clip.), and whether the bridge clip will work in conjunction with your detachable double stack box magazine.

If it works, then the ammo should be mounted up on 5rd NATO stripper clips. By mounting the bridge clip onto the top of the box magazine, that magazine can be replenished five rounds at a time by simply inserting the strippers into the bridge and pushing the rounds home into the magazine.

It is an outstanding way to employ stripper clips for feeding rifles which have scopes mounted.

The bridge clip is designed to work with NATO-Standard M14, etc. magazines. When DM designers pass over the M14 magazines, it's also quite possible they are passing over the capability of using this very convenient replenishment system.

Good stuff Greg!

I run AICS mags, and I use G3 mags and just strip rounds out to transfer into my AICS mags. You can get beater G3 mags for a couple bucks each. I can carry a day's worth in a dump pouch on my belt rig or I can carry a whole weekend's worth in my ruck:

The pic didn't load first time on Scotty's post, so I didn't see the scope tube mount-
Genius!! That is something I'd replicate in a heartbeat if I ran a top feeder.

Re: how to carry ammo for a tac competition?

what a "tacticool" thread. Assuming you plan on shooting that ammo, protecting it properly before shooting should be a concern. Go "bust some brush" to find out why you don't want ammo hanging off your rifle like jewelry.

How bout this one for 40 cents:

Or if you just have to spend more money ($2). Maybe put a little foam in the top to protect the bullet tips.

I'll go slower:

1) Settle into firing position.
2) Pull ammo card out of bag.
3) Attach card to velcro on gun.
4) Fire. Hit. Rack bolt.
5) Repeat #4 four more times.
6) Drop ammo from card into port as needed.
7) Place ammo card in bag when done.

Have you ever used a top-loader in a hurry? Doesn't sound like it to me. Keep up the "brush bustin'" there chief.

Re: how to carry ammo for a tac competition?

Scooter, your option #1 is just keen until you have been bustin brush in the rain for a week and everything you own is soaked. Then those little cardboard things are going to look like oatmeal. BTDT with the LC Factory boxes. I have several of the 20 round plastic boxes for reloading and testing loads from the bench. If you don't rubber band them closed they will dump. Even if you put foam in the top they are loud when you get more than one in a ruck pocket or asspack.

These are all problems led to the Redman Cards and to my Ammo Burritos.

If you are looking for a stupid cheap solution, the FGMM trays are by far the best option. I usually save them up until I have a couple hundred, then give them away.

Re: how to carry ammo for a tac competition?

Scooter,
During the 91 tour through the sand box. I would have given my left nut for something like either a ammo burrito or ammo card. We took BDU shirt sleeves and sewed them into something like a burrito for 50cal rounds gluing split plastic cigar tubes into each sewn pocket to hold the rounds tight.
cardboard box's crush, hold dew, and sound like jingle bells after a couple of hours in a pack.
I used to have 4 cigar tubes 100mph taped to the lower tube of my M-500 to carry 4 "ready" rounds.

Re: how to carry ammo for a tac competition?

i just picked up 6 red tac ammo cards after reading some of the threads on here.

From the looks of it, even if they got wet I dont think it would be a problem because the material would still hold strong

Re: how to carry ammo for a tac competition?

The responses to scooter's post are why I use the HK alloy mags.
They hold 20rds handily, tightly, easily distributed (I started carry them when I ran a top feeded), and aren't afected by water).
I usually replenish them overnight from the big ziploc at the hotel tactical forward base.

Re: how to carry ammo for a tac competition?

For the price of the red tac ammo cards, I tried to make one out of left over webbing and elastic from old packs, worked out well for me. Im all for the DIY guy, has saved me a ton over the years. Its not how pretty it looks its how it functions.
