Go to a class III dealer in your state and get the form 4, Finger print cards and 2 passport photos. Then get a chief or Sheriff to sign the form 4. Send the paperwork in and WAIT.......Thats about it. If the Sheriff has the form 4 paperwork get it from the Sheriff. Most dealers will gladly help you out. Good Luck.

A class 3 dealer will be able to answer your questions. It's really that simple, and in order to get a suppressor you need to go through a dealer anyway.

Before you purchase a suppressor find out if the sheriff will sign off- or the COP. Even if the ownership is legal that does not mean they will sign off on you. Then you need to look at other options such as a trust or LLC-all of which is very well explained on this site.

It may be a hassle. Iowa law says in part;

724.1 Offensive weapons.
An offensive weapon is any device or instrumentality of the following types:
8. Any mechanical device specifically constructed and designed so that when attached to a firearm silences, muffles, or suppresses the sound when fired. However, this subsection does not apply to a mechanical device possessed and used by a person solely for the purpose of shooting a deer pursuant to an approved city special deer population control plan if the person has a valid federal permit to possess and use the mechanical device.

724.2 Authority to possess offensive weapons.
Any of the following is authorized to possess an offensive weapon when the person's duties or lawful activities require or permit such possession:
1. Any peace officer.
2. Any member of the armed forces of the United States or of the national guard.
3. Any person in the service of the United States.
4. A correctional officer, serving in an institution under the authority of the Iowa department of corrections.
5. Any person who under the laws of this state and the United States, is lawfully engaged in the business of supplying those authorized to possess such devices.
6. Any person, firm or corporation who under the laws of this state and the United States is lawfully engaged in the improvement, invention or manufacture of firearms.

I'm not a lawyer, so I'm not sure if this means you need to have an FFL to own a silencer. I'm not surprised that the sheriff's office did not know what you are talking about.

After reading that, I do not want to live in Iowa.

Iowa goverment says, "We are the only ones that can own supressors except for the people we buy them from and the people that make them for us."

That look about correct?

Robert,
That is good to know. However, if you are a Cl 3 dealer can you own a can ?
Do you happen to know what it takes to become a Cl 3 dealer in IOWA ?
Some previous posts have stated to find a Cl 3 dealer, but I don't think there are any in IOWA.

Re: how to own a suppressor in the state of iowa

hey rob hows it goin, i talked to the sheriff today and he told me thats strictly up to the atf and any one in iowa would have to become a class 3 dealer and cannot sell to civilians but can sell to anyone who has a class 3 or anyone whos state allows them with the proper documentation, which to me is a load of crap but thats iowa for ya.

maybe in texas this is the case but i don't believe it is there either. i will say in indiana for sure The sheriff isn't signing off on you or saying your good to go..he is signing off on the fact that in your state and county people are legally allowed to own suppressor's and sbr. this is how it is for a form 4 in indiana. maybe in other states the sheriff or COP have the authorization to screw you but not here. but from the looks of the above posts in iowa you need to be a class 3 so you might be screwed unless you wanna go that route

Re: how to own a suppressor in the state of iowa

This is a lot of discussion on a topic just started yesterday.

For you to have a silencer or any NFA weapon, in the State of Iowa, you would need to be police with the silencer issued to you as a duty weapon by a dept. be a NFA firearms dealer, which is just a FFL dealer that pays an extra fee of $500/year. Or be contracted by the state of Iowa to thin the deer population, without the Greenies finding out. I know of 5 NFA dealers in Iowa. If you went to an Iowa gun show and asked the vendor about silencer and they said go talk to your sheriff, then either you got a stupid one or an out of state vendor who did not know Iowa laws. You can have more than one state of residence by ATF rules so if you live somewhere else besides Iowa you can get a silencer there but not take it back to Iowa to use. Of course if you leave Iowa you will most likely have to leave your same sex wife/husband behind.

If you make it into the Sioux City area I can take you out with some toys. Wyoming could use another NFA dealer if you decide to move there.

Re: how to own a suppressor in the state of iowa

It took the efforts of 1 person in Nebraska for NFA to become legal, it took 3 people in KS to get NFA to become legal, MO residents had to work a bit harder but after CCW passed silencers were legal within 6 months.

Iowa has too many dirt farmers. Move to cattle country where men think about something other than Corn and Rain.
