I recently bought a remington 5R and its all ready to go except for the recoil pad... I was told it was just a matter of cutting off the old recoil pad and unscrewing the screws an installing the new recoil pad which in this case is a Limbsaver recoil pad. Well I cut it off an the effin thing seems to be epoxied on...... WTF!!!! I've tried everything to take it off but I just cant.... Help me...

Try a razor Knife with a long blade. Slowly work in down the pad. It will come off. just be patient.
And yes they are glued on.

put the stock in the freezer, go to bed, when you wake up have a hammer and sharp putty knife ready, it will come right off. You might want to think about filling the hollow cavity with lead shot mixed with 5 minute epoxy, the extra wieght and the limbsaver really balance and tame the hell out of the rifle, here is my PSS stock

Re: How to remove recoil pad?!

I just did one yesterday. I use a heat gun and a razor to get the old pad off. Then I grind out enough of the foam inside the stock to inlet a piece of hardwood for the inside. Then I use devcon bedding compound to hold the piece of wood inside the stock and do a grind to fit recoil pad.

Should a put the lead shot in the void like I did, I can't tell you much it changes the rifle for the better, balances out the rifle, removes an assload of felt recoil, that one mod make a huge difference in my PSS, later in life when you get a McM A5 with sniper fill it will feel light wieght

I removed the original pad off my HS precision stock. I simply Clamped it in the vice rocked the stock back-and-forth and It pulled off.

There are several ways to remove a recoil pad as mentioned below:
  1. Heat and Peel Method
  2. Screw Removal Method
  3. Razor Blade or Knife Method
  4. Grinding or Sanding Method
  5. Chemical Softener Method
  6. Pliers or Grip Method.

The freezer method mentioned above 13 years ago is the method HS Precision suggests using for their stocks. Not saying other methods don't work, just saving someone from googling, emailing, or making a phone call. Freezer method works quite well as I've done it before. Most of the epoxy stays on the old pad. If your quick enough, what little remaining epoxy on the stock can easily be chipped away with a putty knife, regular knife, hammer/screwdriver, etc.. before the epoxy warms back up and gets tacky.
