How to test accuracy at 100 yards with a 7x scope?

Hey folks- new to this but love the forum from what Ive read.

I picked up a CZ 452 with intent of training up for when my accurized Norinco m14 is ready.


I loove to shoot hanging steel of variable sizes with 22lr out to 100-200 and I want to find the best bulk ammo thats good out to those ranges.


Last week I shot 5 shot groups of 5 different ammo types off a bench to compare @ 50 yards. I hear 22lr accuracy changes when you go past 100 though.

With a 7x scope I have trouble getting that definitive target picture that I get at 50! Any tips on how to get some good scientifically controlled groups off the bench? Besides the obvious- practice!

Hoping to figure out which 22 ammo to buy- I see the way things going in the states 22 ammo is gonna go way up in Canada and I want to stock up on what shoots good now!

More like 50yds.

I wouldnt bother with groups past 50 if youre just shooting steel.

Bulk ammo isnt great, and you really see why its so cheap when you start shooting at 200 yards. I bet my savage doesnt shoot a 10 inch group at 200 yards on a perfect day with bulk ammo. Variance in powder charge really hurts your vertical dispersion past 100.

If you strive for accuracy id look for wolf match, eley, lapua, ect. I personally shoot cci standard velocity because it is (was) affordable and universally available.

I have shot steel out to 300 with a 22lr and I will tell you that it can be frustrating. The slightest amount of 6 oclock wind can make you miss long and just alittle head wind can make you end up short.

The cartridge really wasnt designed to shoot past 50 yards, it is a blast to stretch it out though. When you can count out whole seconds while the bullet is in the air and you hear a "ping" after it thats pretty fun. I can see how much fun it would be to live out west where you can shoot past 1k. One day...

my dad has had very good luck with the winchester wildcat ammo. it shoot great out of his rifle, but has the occasional flyer that is the ammo. persoanlly i have had better luck with cci blazer. it's consistant and seems to shoot good in most guns. SK standard plus shoots pretty good for a lower cost match ammo and heard good things about the wolf match ammo that is made by SK.

Increase the visibility of your intended point of impact.

Determine the diameter of the bullseye.

Set your scope left and down, right and down, left and up or right and up half the diameter of the bullseye.

Place the bullseye with the horizontal cross hair tangent to the top or bottom of the bull (depending upon which adjustment you elected to use) and then place the vertical cross hair on the edge of the bull (once again, depenting which adjustment you elected to use [hold your scope in the opposite direction of the adjustment].

Shoot. With the cross hairs held quartering away from the bull, you can get a better image than if your cross hairs are obscuring the bull.

A 10x scope will give a good human eye 1/10 inch detail at 100 yards. A 7x scope will give less, however, if you increase your quartered-target by approximately 30% you'll have the same sight picture as a 10x at 100.

Roughly, get yourself a 1.5'' square or circle and quarter it at 100.

Pretty much what Enough Said said... In our Hunter Rifle matches we are limited to 6x scopes. On the 100 yd target, the cream colored area that contains the bull is 2.5" (bull is 1/2", the "x" is .050") with a red 3/4" ring around it. With the 6x scope (and much attention to detail) you can actually hold off slightly to try to move the impact 1/8" to go for the "x" by quartering the bull and then moving slightly off that position. Now, if it was only as easy to do, as it is to write....
