Gunsmithing Howa 1500 308 scope mount same as Rem 700 SA?

Ok, I'm thoroughly confused now..... I thought that Howa 1500 .308 uses same mount as Remington 700 short action? I just got http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=145537 and while the spacing on the holes is right the distance between the front pair and back pair is short by about 1/4".... Did they have the long one packed or...?

it uses Rem 700 LA scope mount, if you're using a one piece base.

Damn... there's logic for you.. mismatch manufacturers and use a LA base on a SA rifle..... ugh.....

I have the Howa varminter and it did take the two piece rem 700 bases also.

the 2 piece bases fit.

the one piece basses do not.
you might have to buy a rem aswell to go with that base, lol

You can use either the 2 piece bases for a Remmy, There has been some discussion if you use a canted 2 piece with the longer action that it would put the scope in a bind, I would verify that before tourquing the scope down.... Or you can buy a one piece base from either EGW or Ken Farrel..

I personaly use the EGW mount.. With a 50mm Nightforce, I am using .823 badger rings and it fits quite well..

That's odd... What is the difference between a Badger base and a EGW base.... I have a Howa 1500 and by no means will a 1pc Remmy short action base fit... The bolt spacing is too far apart..

Clue me in to what I am missing...

Yeah.. this is really confusing: I talked to the HOWA rep today and he said only the bases they sell on their website will fit

But others seem to have reported having luck with Remington bases..... I'll stop by a store today and measure the spacing difference between the SA and LA base.

EGW makes the rail for Legacy... EGW now offers them on their site too... A couple years ago when I bought mine, all that was available was a zero cant, now 20moa is available...

You have already tried the Remmy base and it doesn't work....

I am almost certain the long action base will not fit either...

Yup... stopped by a store that had one piece mounts and compared the three:
Rem SA, Rem LA and Howa 1500 SA.... the HOwa 1500 SA was in between the two....
