Barreled action in 243 varmint barrel 600$ from legacy sports. Any reason not to get one? Manners makes a stock for it. CDI does DBM. Reviews seem pretty good on em. I hear they are close behind Tikka. My smith/ffl guy said he can have one deliverd to him in couple weeks. What do you guys think? Worth messing around with or should wait for a Remmy.

If you take a look on Gunbroker, you can find a whole rifle for a lot less... I shoot a Howa, in a Manners T4A with CDI bottom metal, its a good combo.. If you rebarrel it though, you'll need a gunsmith that's willing to cut metric threads. If your smith won't look, to the gentleman I have listed in my signature, Robert builds great rifles...

Ill have to have a look. I dont look at gun broker much. Thanks for the heads up on the threads. I'll have to talk to him about that. At one point I wanna switch it over to a 6 or 6.5X47 lapua maybe. and Im checking out his page atm.

The howa 1500 is an excellent buy. I have hogue 22" in 223 and can easily shoot sub moa with any ammo. The action is very smooth as the bolt is polished and trigger is adjustable. Only thing i would change about is a larger bolt knob and convert it to accept magazines, which Legacy sells kits for. Its definitely a fun accurate shooter that doesnt break the bank.

+1 for the Howa. I know I'm like a broken record when it comes to these things but after working on and shootin' various styles and manufacturers, I'm sold on howa when putting them in a lineup with savage and remington (price point). And the metric threads aren't a big deal to any gunsmith worth his salt. Hell my primary huntin' rifles now a howa action with a shilen barrel and custom wood stock, and my primary tac rifle's a howa with a krieger barrel, mcm a5 stock and cdi dbm. Absolutely love em.

IMO the Howa/Vanguard is the best commercial action out there. One piece bolt, M16 extractor, flat bottom action with integral lug, and a great trigger (on the new ones with two stage). The only downside on the 243 is they're a 1:10 twist so you won't be able to shoot any of the great bullets but you can still shoot bullets like the 95gr Berger and the 87gr Vmax both of which will do great at long range.

I say go for it.

Here's my current Howa match rifle.. This rifle has treated me very well over the last 18mo.

Specs,
6x47 Lapua 105 Hybrids @ 3100
Krieger 8tw Heavy Varmint @ 28"
Manners T4A
CDI bottom metal

And although you didn't ask I have a few myself (and FN SPR's and R700's) Great rifle, excellent action and more and more after market accessories now available.

Thanks All. he didnt give me a price on the barreled action. That was the price from the web. Dave-O how is the barrel life on the 6x47 lapua? does the half MM make a difference?

Right now I'm sitting at 1900rds through mine, give or take.. I think 2500 will be a good number and mine will just get a barrel then.. Not sure how long the barrel life is for the 6.5x47 though

Sweet. Thanks. 2500 is a number I like to hear. I gotta call my smith here soon and see What he thinks. I dont think he has done and of the X47 lapuas before. Hard thing is gonna be waiting on the manners stock. I think I may just shoot the 243 barrel awhile though. and get a B&C stock while I wait on a manners.

I have 3 Howas, 2 short and 1 long. They are an investment cast action, good and bad points there. But they are strong, very strong and the machining on them is good. The 223 was a barreled action I put in a B&C stock, shoots 1/2 groups at a 100. The other short action has a Shilen barrel in .204 as a 20 practical. So easy to shoot its almost boring. A good smith and any problems you have are history, like a 700 they've been the same thing for years.

My 1500 is a .308, 24" heavy with the axiom stock and the limited Mossy Oak Brush camo from a few years back. Shoots consistently at or under 3/4" using my reloads. I've shot it out to 1,200 yds as well as hunting. Great all around, accurate rifles. The recoil lug being a part of the receiver and not separate is a mental plus for me too. I have swapped the scope since this picture, but no changes to the rifle. I recommend them to anyone.

I have a vanguard that is almost forty years old. I would buy another, or recommend it to someone on a budget. It is still very accurate and we have never had a problem with anything. Excellent rifle.

Buds gun shop sells the barreled actions for around 385, but they are all out of stock right now.
Very nice action with a very good factory trigger with typical Japanese attention to manufacturing process.
A better rifle out of the box than the rem 700, with a superior 1 piece bolt.

getting the barrels off for a rebarrel can be tricky.
XLR also makes a chassis for them, which would be cheaper than a manners with DBM, though the manners are a damn nice stock and much lighter

Howa makes extremely good rifles at a price point well below what they are worth. Some get a little irritated about buying Japanese either because of being foreign or because the Japanese deny their citizens firearms. The people complaining have no problem buying an A.I. though, and their government works the same way

I have a 1500 in .308 and the Axiom stock as depicted above. Great rifle and once away from factory ammo is a great shooter. IRRC, Legacy Sports International is the prime importer of the brand.

Those same people probably have or have had at some point plenty of Japanese consumer products (vehicles, appliances, electronics) without thinking twice about it.

And what about those who piss on Howa but gladly buy Browning rifles or over/under shotguns (all made in Japan)? WTF

However, in defense of the Brits, it is FAR easier to get a shotgun or a rifle in the UK than it is in Japan. There are plenty of guns (particularly shotguns) being sold in the UK at this time.

I've built three rifles on Howa actions; latest one is a 260 Imp 30* with a 26" Krieger sendero contour in a McM adj. A5. Used PTG's new DBM on this build - wasn't able to get one of these units before McM was ready to do the inlet, so had to do the DBM inlet on the stock that'd been done for the factory hinged floorplate BM. I'm not crazy about doing inlet work, but this was a pretty simple, straightforward job, which took less than an hour to complete. BUT - I also had to mill part of the projection at the rear of the magazine cutout on the action in order to get the clearance needed to allow the magazine to latch-up, and to give the ctdg rims clearance to feed up out of the magazine. Still pretty simple work, but I'd hate to have to do it with a file or Dremel. However, when it was all said & done, it feeds like a champ, and the PTG unit's price is less than half what CDI charges.

I'd trued the actions of the first two Howa builds, but once I got them dialed-in, found there was very little need to do it. Just figured that since I'd spent the time & effort to get them dialed-in, might as well carry on. I leave one lathe set up with change gears to cut metric threads; it's sort of a PITA to do, since you have to leave the half-nuts engaged from start to finish when cutting metric threads on a lathe with an inch lead screw. I worried about that - especially when single-pointing the action threads - but once I got started, and kept distractions to a minimum, I had no problems with the job. I use T15 HSS threading inserts in an Arthur Warner Co threading bar, since carbide inserts will chip if you don't get them retracted from the work before you stop the spindle at the end of each threading pass. The T15 inserts result in a smoother cut than carbide at slower speeds, so it's a win/win situation as far as I'm concerned.

Whatever - the only downsides I see to using Howa actions are that the bolt lift tends to be a bit stiffer than a M700 or M70, and there are fewer aftermarket parts (compared to all the stuff out there for 700s). The new HACT trigger on the 260 I just finished is pretty good out of the box; I adjusted it down to just under 2lbs, with a good, crisp & clean break. The blued bbl'd actions require a cut into the bbl shank right up against the receiver face in order to be able to remove them - after the cut's made, you can usually unscrew the action off the bbl by hand.

I intended to sell this 260 Imp from the start; however, it shoots just fine, so if it doesn't sell at our club's annual gun show later this month, it's not gonna break my heart to keep it for awhile.
ETA - Added photo: CeraKote is sniper gray; can't see it in the photo, but I indexed a Harrell's tactical brake, which added about 1-3/4" to the bbl length. EGW 20 moa sloped rail mounts a Sightron SIII 6-24x50 LRMOA in TPS TSR rings.

The stock trigger kinda sucks on both Howas I've had (30-06 hunting sporter and 308 HB). On the 30-06 I switch to a Timney, and on the 308 I went with Rifle Basix.

ETA: I'm referring to the single stage trigger that used to be standard on all Howa 1500 and Weatherby Vanguards. I've never used the new Howa two stage trigger, but by all accounts it is a good one. I will definitely purchase one since they are only $124 on Weatherby's online store and I have long been a fan of two stage triggers from my NRA highpower and smallbore rifle competition days.
