Our local club sets asside the last two days before hunting season for "Sight in Days" for out of state hunters.
I ran the range yesterday and overall, I was inpressed with the out of state hunters. Safety wise and their ability to shoot.
Yes there were a couple who needed work, but for only shooting for the hunting, they weren't too bad.
One guy shows up with and starts laying his gear out. Sets out a box of 300 Whby Ammo and a beat up rifle case. I figure Ut Oh, bit more then needed for antelope, so I desided to watch him for flinches I see in many Wheatherby shooters.
Soon as I saw the rifle I start to figure maybe this guy knows what he's doing, there was a sticker on the side of the rifle with his dope.
He loads up the rifle, fires one round at 100 yards, No scope adjustments that I saw. I look through the spotting scope and see its 1 inch high. He then loads three more rounds in his gun, and in rapid fire, hits three gongs a 200 yards, bang bang bang, then puts his rifle back into the case and starts helping his shooting partner who's kid just put on a new scope.
I was quite impress.
You hear a lot about out of state hunters, blasting away with magnums they can't shoot, but over all, from the people who showed up yesterday I was impressed, most of which I wouldn't mind hunting with.
I got a kick out of one guy from Wisconsin. On the way to Wyoming for his antelope hunt he stops by Cabala's in rapid city and buys a new semi Berneli rifle in 270 WSM. The scope was bore sighted but needed tweeked. Which didn't go to bad, got on pretty quick.
His hunting partner tells me he just got the rifle. I mentioned that I would want a few rounds through a new rifle before I took an expensive out of state hunt. The partner laughs, seems I didn't get the whole story, He's done this before. He delebertly leaves his rifle home, telling his wife he "forgot it" and to keep from wasting money on a hunt and no rifle, he buys one.
Now that's a man after my own heart. I've heard of people "forgetting" their rifles on hunts before, now I wonder how many left the rifle on purpose.
