I'm in need is one advice for some new hunting gear. It's time to retire the old cathartt cover-all and get some new gear for this winter. I hunt deer in Tennessee so it gets chilly but not too chilly. Most mornings it's in the teens and same goes once the sun goes down. I'm looking for some direction on what everyone suggests for some gear. Not looking to spend crazy amounts as I only get out about a 7-14 days a year. (No Sitka)

thanks in advance,
Ryan

Estes... What type of hunting? Tree stand? Spot and stalk? This will determine your choice of clothing and layering process.

Of course... try not to sweat and stay away from cotton.

I run the incinerator from sitka and merino base and synthetic mid layers but you said no sitka. So thats why i said get some more carhart its tough and can serve multiple purposes . only thing i can see needing is maybe a poncho or some rain proof layer. Keeping feet and hands warm in a all day sub zero stand situation is a bigger challenge than my body.

Layers is the key if you're in chilly weather. Upstate NY goes from 0F in the morning, to 50F mid day sometimes... The problem is, walking in you're down to almost base layers (depending on terrain), then putting on 2, sometimes 3 layers, to sit in the stand, and then peeling off layer after layer until you're back down to 1-2 layers by 2-3pm (if you can sit in a stand that long...).

I like the merino/wool base layers, then a long sleeve T in synthetic (usually camo in case I get down to that layer) and light synthetic sweat pants. Then if it's really cold, I'll put on a fleece sweatshirt (UA, Craighoppers, Patagonia, North Face, etc) and sometimes another set of sweatpants (it gets stupid cold up here). Lastly, my insulated bibs/parka. Take a good size backpack to hold layers. Boots vary with weather. Always good merino socks. Gloves vary with weather too, but I always have a muff around my waist, sometimes with a hot hands packet inside. Hats vary from a light balaclava to a trappers hat and neck gaitor/face mask.

If you buy Carhartt, I hope you get it in something other than Brown or Black... Seen too many guys walking through the woods in that shit that look just like a deer or black bear in dim light...

Indiana here. I run Arctic Shield during the Nov firearms season with a pair of cloth coveralls/sweats underneath for treestanding. Had an amish guy replace the zippers for $20 to some heavy duty metal and they have worn great over the past 3 years I have owned. Plenty of pockets, lightweight for the warmth they give, true to size, quiet, and very water resistant (not waterproof). Bought their cold weather bibs and parka for just under $200; they make several different "lines" depending on the weather you intend to hunt in.
