I want to hunt deer this year with my 308 and/or 6.5 CM ARs, but often there is not time for hearing protection when hunting deer. What would you guys recommend as a muzzle device to replace the comp I target shoot with that will be softer on the ears?

The obvious choice is a suppressor... If its legal there. Hoping it passes here this year.
Other than that, if you have to have one you should go with a comp that doesn't direct the blast back towards you. The best brakes do that and are very loud. I have a thread protector that I use when hunting and when I don't want to use the pro ears.

Old school birdcages aren't that bad compared to the Miculek style and PWS brakes I have had. From what I've heard and read the one Seekins makes and the Battle comp are good brakes that aren't as loud.

Im kinda in the same boat. I am building a deer rifle that is going to need a brake. I was kind of thinking a vias or something but open to suggestions.
The Griffin is very similar to the Battle Comp and is said to less blasty than a regular baffle type comp, with excellent brake and comp properties, I'm wanting to try one out on a 30 cal...
Other than that, a comp that directs blast forward, like the dpms Levang (but in 30 cal) would probably be fairly quiet, maybe more so than a bare muzzle. Check out the KIES.

They should be available and in stock...They only downside is for a hunting rifle, if left on in a soft gun case it could rip up the end some with the aggressive teeth. A less-lethal option for CQB'ing elk and deer : )

IMO there is no such thing as no time for hearing protection. there are plenty of passive hearing protection options on the market, some as cheap as 20 bucks. I use Combat Arms Earplugs, same plugs they issue our troops in combat, you can still hear a pin drop and they keep noises such as firearms to a reasonable level. I bought plugs for every family member, that's how much I like them.
Just make sure to make it one shot to limit the hearing exposure. In all reality, switch to a flash hider from a break for hunting. Check your zero when you do this but this will help alleviate the excessive noise directed at the shooter.
Surefire MB762-213F. I had one on my M1A Scout and it made a big difference over the standard M1A mb. Also check the Surefire Sonic EP7 hearing pro. You can leave the middle plug out to help hear animals moving around. I use them duck hunting all the time. Comfortable to wear all day and run about $8 on ebay.
