Hunting & Fishing Hunting with a .260

This one was just under 100 yards. The farthest I've killed with mine is an antelope just under 600. Psinclair on here has killed every animal in North America with a 260...

140 amax here. 2730 fps.

3 white tail this year. Medium doe, 363 yd double lung. Ran about 30 yards and went down. Small buck, about 200 yard, DRT neck shot. Small doe, 241 yard heart. Ran about 10 yards and went down.

Seems to do well so far!

One of my favorite rifles is my dad's cheap old savage Model 111 in .260 Rem. Used an old box of core-lokt 140's this year. This deer was 85 yards out in the woods and ran about 50 yards, left a 2 foot wide blood trail the whole way.

Greg,
How true. 3 of us went to Wyoming last fall and each of us shot a mule deer and pronghorn.
I used a 260 with 130 VLD
2nd guy used a 6.5x55 with 130 Accubond
3rd guy used a 6.5x55 with 129 grain GMX.

All resulted in very dead animals!

My brother with his B&C Montana Big Horn Sheep, taken in 2011, with my .260 at 320 meters and one 130gr Berger.....he has his own .260 now....grin!

not a 260 but the 6.5 cm has worked fine for me

Come on Kurt, need details. Bullet, yardage, act. LoL. Nice Whitetail !!

it is a 6.5 creed built by AD Arms trued rem action, bartlien cut to 24" b&c stock 140 amax with a vortex hs lr on top was about 220 ish if i remember right. we were walking down to the buck that my wife had just shot and while looking at it she said look at that and there he stood, all i saw were the wicked brows and used her shoulder as a rest and one shot and down he went.

Not 260, but 6.5mm in similar velocities. Have shot small deer in the hundreds ranges long and short with 140 and 123 amax.
The 123 is a bit more aggressive, I prefer the 140. It is unusual that they walk as much as a step (when they do, I semi-panic thinking I've botched the shot). Exception is a lung shot where they can run out 10-30 meters.

etc etc etc. I shoot a short barreled 6,5x284, so in a normal 260 you'll likely see the same velocities I do? The amax seems to be very easy to load, I have never had any problems achieving sufficient precision with that bullet.

Alright gkempf and the rest of you, today you cost me $4100! After reading this thread over and over and doing some more searching on the web, I ordered a GAP hybrid Thunder Ranch/Extreme Hunter today in 260. I've hunted all my life with calibers like 30.06 and now use a 308 and can't wait for the 260. I guess I should say you all probably cost me closer to $6K as now I'm going to finally have to get into reloading, oh wait, make that $8K as it'll need some fine glass too.

Lucky I just bought the wife a new ring for our anniversary or I might have had to put some of you on the phone with her to explain things! Psinclair and huntr, you both would have had to talk to her for sure as I would have referred to your success as just why I needed to get this on order!

Thanks a lot!

I'm a month into about a 3 to 6 month wait for my non typical GAP in 260. I basically went with a Thunder Ranch style with a longer lop as I need 14 1/2. Dustin was great walking me through everything and putting up with me changing my mind 4 or 5 times on details. He let me know what they had in stock to shorten the lead time, can't wait!

Tell me about it. Before I joined this site, I was fine hunting with my Kimber Montana's and Remington mountain rifles. I sold 4 rifles to buy my non typical and another 5 to buy my Extreme Hinter. Best rifle decisions I have ever made!

Every time I look at this thread it makes we want chamber my new hunting rifle in 260. I'm going to be using it for elk so I'm currently leaning towards 7-08 but now I'm not so sure. I like being able to get match ammo from Southwest or Copper Creek and they always have 260.

Man you know there is nothing like having a really great shooting rifle. My .260 will hold 4in. groups at 800yrds. I have been hunting in several western states and Alaska but have always bow hunted. I cannot wait to get a big muley in that Vortex scope at 400 to 600yrds and let a 140gr. Amax do its thing. That rifle makes me feel like a kid again.
