Gunsmithing Hydro dipping

Hi,

Looking to get multicam on my AR next year. I'm on the fence with either hydro dipping or cerakote/duracoat.

How does the dipping wear? It seems like it would be the "weakest", but that's all on gut. I've never eve handled one.

Can duracoat be safely used on the barrel of the AR? Not sure if it will stand up to the temps. It will be a heavy, LR rig so I won't be burning through mags like a 5.56. Hoping to be able to use it due to options.

Also, leaning towards "paint" since it's actually cheaper. Most people seem to end up clear coating the dip; which I can't do myself.

Cerakote clear can be applied over a hydro dip but won't be as durable as a straight Cerakote finish. hydro it's going to be much cheaper than laying out that pattern with Cerakote. I've spent many hours experimenting with hydro over Cerakote, it can be done as an option also.

I had hydro dip multicam pattern on my 700.
I didn't care for it and am currently prepping to strip it off and cerakote it all.

Why did you not like? Feel? The actual pattern, color, etc?

The barreled action just looked like it was wrapped with a sticker. It looked good for a while, but I quickly fell out of interest with it. The stock felt a little sticky.. kinda like it never fully hardened (that's the best way I can explain it). The stock also had a satin sheen to it that I didn't care for. Much if this may be attributed to the person who did the application though, I'm not sure.

Clear coat is applied after the dip, the type used has a lot to do with the finished product. I use nothing but Cerakote, however automotive clear coat is common.

I haven't heard much that bad. It nkes me lean toward who applied it. I think if I can get it for similar pricing, I'm leaning toward cerakote/duracoat.

I cant attach pictures from my phone but I posted a pic of a multicam hydro job with Cerakote barreled action in the Gunsmith thread. The stock was wood, we put a Cerakote clear over the graphic.

This was a factory weatherby mark5 synthetic stock hydro dipped in a carbon fiber pattern.
It can look pretty cool at times. The hydro dip seems to be descent and durable enough to use when sprucing up factory stocks.
