Hunting & Fishing I Don't Get It

There's a guy I know.
In his own right, he's a heck of an outdoorsman. A skilled hunter and very knowledgeable fellow.

Right around Christmas, he showed me a rack from a buck that he had arrowed some weeks prior, but didn't recover immediately.
He said he got a bad hit on the deer and despite looking for it several times, he simply couldn't find it.

Then he says he was hunting the same area later in the firearms season and stumbled upon the trophy, laid up in some thick stuff, where it had apparently laid down and expired.

I complemented him on the impressive trophy and he said it would likely make the book.
The deer, for this area, was a monster!

Fast-forward to today.

Another guy who knows this hunter, and who knows me, walks into my office and hands me a printout of an ebay auction for a set of antlers.
He asked me if they looked familiar.

At first, it didn't register, but then I looked at the them more closely and I noticed they were sold from Illinois.

Our mutual acquaintance paid $520 for the rack on ebay! and he's going around telling everyone this amazing story of how he harvested what could easily turn out to be one of the top whitetails ever taken in this state.

The guy who had the printout told me that he's been watching him do this kind of crap for years. He said he's never said anything, because he believes it's a sickness, kind of like gambling addictions or alcoholism.

We looked through his history on ebay and he's buying other trophy wildlife items and spending a bunch of money on them.

If this deer gets scored and makes P&Y, I'm going to have to speak out.

I'm not really mad at the guy so much as I just feel sorry for him.

Re: I Don't Get It

Has to feel good to have to lie to make yourself look "cool" i'd definitley report that one to P&Y if he enters it into the books. I work with mentally ill adults as a proffesion and if this is an addiction, or a sickness, and you don't call him on it its just reinforcing his actions. Not a good deal...

Re: I Don't Get It

A guy in CA was doing the same thing and got charged by the DFG. I read the article. He was buying racks from Wyoming and recording them in CA. The DFG officer started investigating it after he recorded what would have been 2 state records in the same year. I think he is being charged with 5 different charges.

Here is the link off of the CA DFG website.

Re: I Don't Get It

Apparently we are working on a nationwide epidemic - Here in NY there is a guy got himself some publicity for a set of shed antlers that would be close to a state record. It turns out they were bought on ebay. He is a guy who has been pretty notorious over the past few years for connecting with serious trophy bucks. Now, legit or not, some of the stories surrounding those hunts have been called into question. I do not know many of the facts but I always thought there was something a little fishy about the guy.

Re: I Don't Get It

Look at me mommy! Didn't get enough love as a child I guess. I have a guy I hunt with some. He shoots a 138" buck then shortly after happens across a small town auction where he picks up a 150" rack for like forty bucks. He calls the taxidermist where he is getting the 138", his personal best, mounted and says he wants him to mount the 150" with the 138 cape. Then, you guessed it; I hear from a mutual acquaintance that he is telling the story about how he shot the 150. I don't get it either.

Re: I Don't Get It

It is against the law here in NC to sell deer antlers or any big game part. I would have a hard time listening to his line of crap if I knew the real truth. You have to wonder if the guy is starting to believe his own lies. That is such a bad example for all the sportsmen that do the right thing. It ain't always about a BIG set of antlers. Sever all ties with the jerk. Just my two cents worth!!!
