I shoot 7x62 with my REM 700 5r?

Hey Guys,
I’m new here and reading and learning lots and lots of info. I’m looking at getting some Federal Gold matchking ammo for my Remington 308 700 5r. I got this gun a few days ago after reading the feedback on here! I’m looking to get it in bulk(400-600 rounds) It is cheaper for me to get it in the 7.62 over 308. It is ok if I just shoot the 7.62 in my gun or do i need to stick with the 308 for 2$ a box more? Thanks a lot guys!

You can shoot the 7.62X51 ammo. If you get some M118, you might get acceptable results. BUT, you have purchased one of the best shooting factory barreled rifles on the market. You will not see the true potential of the weapon without using the best ammo available as well. Hand loads will be best, if that is not an option, shoot the Federal gold Match in 168 out to 600 and 175's for anything further.

I too recently purchased a 5R in .308. First day at the range last week sub moa groups at 100 and at 300 yards were the norm with Federal Premium 168 Gr. MK-BTHP. That gun is my new best friend as it makes me look good!

My plan is to run a few more 168's through it and start loading my own, including 175's to find the pet load. Wow, time at the reloading bench and the range; life is good.

I'd be interested to hear if you put any surplus ammo down range with yours and the results. Next gun show I may pick some up just to try too.

Thanks Rob for the reply. I will be getting some federal gold medal matchking in the 7.62x51!

There are several excellent alternatives.
(Gold medal match is excellent stuff)

American Eagle 168OTM (NOT the 150 grain load). It is a 7.62x51 match load with speers 168 grain match bullet.

Southwest Ammo run and gun, either 168 or 175 grain, though they seem to be out if 168 right now. They also have the 168 AMAX load
