Rifle Scopes I suck at mounting optics.

I think my scope is back too far, as I often find myself moving my head back.

Currently when I look through it I see a thick black ring around the glass, from I guess the scope body since I'm too close to the eyepiece?

Here's a picture of it:

I'll try to break loose the Loctite and move it forward a bit and then go through the process of leveling the crosshairs again.

Same problem here. I will be refining my mount (

) this week too. It's either too close, too far, or canted. Guess I'm gonna have to start doing everything at the range.

This is what I do, not that it is science. Simply loosen your rings, get into your normal shooting position. Use a piece of tape to reference your scope at your rear ring once you set eye relief distance. Then level it up.

Yup. You should have proper eye relief setup before you even think about tightening down the rings. The only time I've ever had to move a scope from its original position is when putting it on a different rifle. This is why I try to keep the rings centered on each portion of the tube, if your using a picatinny rail and you do this it gives you a little more flexibility if going to a different rifle to move to forward or back on the picatinny rail.

I like having a picatinny base and rings because it helps to fine tune the scope position.

Also jacks that butt up a little. Go to most public ranges and you will see something like this in a couple of hours easily.

Seriously, once you think that you have the correct eye relief, a simple check is to close your eyes, put the rifle up to your shoulder, open your eyes and you should see the entire picture (no dark circles), no adjusting, moving, etc. When you open your eyes, you want the correct height and eye relief distance to be set for you, no "wiggling".

Relax, take your time, it's worth it.

you tube has plenty of instruction videos. you dont need loctite.
15 inch lbs is fine. lay down on the rifle get comfortable find your natural cheek weld than move the scope forward and back till the black shadow goes away. that will be your sweet spot.
level and tighten. then aim at the blue sky and focus the reticle.

Are you straight behind the rifle in the correct position. After watching the SH Training and correcting my form I mount all my scopes in that general position now to get the right eye relief.

Lay your scope in the rings before tightening them down. Get into your specific prone shooting position set your magnification to its max setting and now adjust the scope forward or back until proper eye relief is achieved. Now mark your stock or scope with a piece of tape or a pencil where the sweet spot is. As far as leveling your scope stick playing cards between your base and the bottom of your scope or you can use a feeler gauge. You'll be golden after that, best of luck!

you know one problem I have is that my long action gets in the way, so I have to keep my head little further back than usual, otherwise the bolt meets my face when I cycle (and not move my head for proper sight picture)

I still need to get a damn cheek rest. long overdue...

+1 on this. I have mounted scopes for my wife and sons, and this is how I do it since I can't judge the position myself. My wife has a history of having trouble clearing scopes, but she has no problems with the ones I have set up for her.
