ideal barrel length to rebarrel with

This is like asking a bar room full of dudes what their ideal woman would be built like. You'll likely end up with a wide arrange of answers, and most will make sense to some extent.

I prefer longer barrels for the extra velocity. 26" would be my minimum on a .338LM.

Around 26-27" will almost always balance perfectly 1-2" in front of the magwell with a more traditional stock and adjustable cheek piece. I say that because you mentioned having a Manners.

If it's the balance you're concerned about here is a good barrel weight calculator:

You can input your current barrel specs and decide if you want something different. On your current barrel you can also remove a muzzle device to see how a shorter barrel handles or tape something like a deep socket driver on the muzzle and see how a longer/heavier barrel is for you.

Going for the 26-27

great reply lol

Long (28"+) if you want extra velocity and don't mind the weight/length.

Short (sub 26") if you want a lighter/more nimble rifle and don't mind the velocity loss penalty.

That's basically it. If you are shooting it only prone and aren't humping it long distances, 28" is likely a good place to start. If you are hunting with it or something similar, then it may be more advantageous to go shorter and lighter.

If it was me, I would likely go 28". That's what my .300NM barrels are.

Okay, I was trying to be funny with my previous post, but I’m not sure anyone got the joke.
Hunting? Range toy? Suppressed or not?
Any hints as to application?

.338 for me is a go long kinda tool, so I prefer the free speed a longer barrel offers. I'd go 28 on the short side, 32 on the long end.

If I had to carry it a lot, a nice lighter profile barrel at about 28 inches would work well for me. If stationary hunting I'd probably bias to longer.

Anything that has Mgnum in its Name or is close to Magnum in terms of Powder Capacity to Bore Diameter, i would go at least 28" or more.
Otherwise, what´s the purpose of a Magnum Cartridge ?
Only exeption would be for Hunting, more Power in shorter overall length and weight
