I know there are Larue haters here, and I have read most of it and understand why. But most can not knock his OBR, just him. So I am in the mood for a new AR in 5.56/223 and an OBR seems to have what I need and has a good reputation for accuracy. I am not drinking the "kool-aid" if I was I would be on bARf.com. I wish GAP made one in 5.56 or the choice would be easier. So question is, if not Larue the what would you choose in 5.56?

Nothing wrong with most Larue products and if you feel they suit your purposes, why would you come on here and attempt to appease people you feel are "haters" ?

It's pretty simple dozens of companies make good rifles, if you are looking for a name brand, then again, easy enough to find, if you feel the best choice for your money is Larue, buy a Larue, you're the one making the decision and needs to live with your decision why do you care what "haters" think anyway ?

These days you'll spend less than most factory complete AR's by having a good 'smith, like Holliger, simply build you an upper.

Wow, I had LowLight input on one of my posts. I feel like I am talking to a god almost.

I really don't car about the "haters". I am not stuck on Larue is what I am saying. Without owning an OBR it would seem to me that the OBR is one of the best of the best (lamborghini of AR's).

So what I am asking is what other companies fall into the "best of the best" as far as 5.56 AR's go. I will look at their products and decide what works for me.

For a accurate 5.56 factory rifle I would look at Larue or Noveske for gas gun. LWRC for piston. All 3 I have in the safe and all 3 shoot.

Seekins New AR design is by far much more innovative, and personally when you look at the history, Larue is far from a Lamborghini, especially since he is pretty new to the game when you consider the likes of a Noveske.

Noveske was the gold standard until the LT Marketing machine decided to ramp up in this space. He has been the bar for too long, which is probably why Mark dislikes him.

Bravo Company is known for building a solid AR, and will give you free stuff too.

PWS builds a very good AR

LMT with their MRP is a great choice...

POF is another, I have used with flawlessly reliability and excellent accuracy


Johnny come lately not withstanding the question is, with Noveske setting the bar early with his switch block, with Seekins and his monolithic design, LMT with their barrel change capability... where is the innovation that makes the OBR anything more than reliable, which has been done to death ? Read the articles by Pat Rodgers on the Filthy 33 from them, which went class after class without a cleaning and hardly a single issue. I saw the rifle first hand run flawlessly with more than 30,000 rounds without a cleaning.

Larue has a great fan base, awesome brand loyalty, but again, where was he 3 years ago -- still figuring out what many did routinely.

I have a new JP SCR-11 I like so much that I just sold my Larue OBR and bought a JP LRP-07 so my controls would be the same for both of my 3 gun rifles.

I will not quote Lowlight exactly, as he has much more experience than I, but I do agree with the direction of his comments.

I am a LMT fan, big fan, and I do believe they build one of the better rifles on the market, notice I did not say the best because some of the rifles listed I have no experience with.

What I will say is my fairly extensive collection of LMT's, both 5.56 and 7.62 have never failed me, not one issue. They are rock solid and with the ability to change barrels is really a positive feature.

I can say this, I will be hard pressed to purchase any other brand of rifle.

I'd get the Larue PredatAR or PredatOBR if I were buying a DI rifle today, but immediately after that would be Seekins and Noveske.

JP right after those, but they just don't have the "soul" that Noveske and Seekins do. For what that is worth.

Lotta sour grapes about Larue, but he makes a solid product. Like you said, nobody is able to argue with the quality, even if they got rubbed the wrong way by the man.

+1 for the POF.

In my opinion, their gas trap piston system is the best piston design available. It uses no springs, seals, etc...which means there's less to worry about in terms of something breaking and it's easy to service. I'm not turning this into a debate, only informing you of what I know.

When I purchase an AR-15, it will be a POF P415 if I go with the gas piston. If I go the DI route, Noveske and LMT will definitely be at the top of my list.

As normal LowLight you are right it is all marketing. I have a couple of Larue mounts, and until I started visiting snipershide I believed them to be the best. While not bad, I understand now that there are better. It does seem to be true many times that the little known companies make better products. Maybe I am reading the wrong magazines or something but here is a small list of companies that I would not know exist if not for this site.

There are more. My point is that this is how I learn what is out there. I asked for some input and I recieved what I was looking for, and I thank everyone for it. Until today I did not know seekins made anything other than rings. I went to there web sight and think that their stuff looks awesome.

Heetseekins, another big hitter I must say I feel special today. What I am looking for is an AR that is reliable (duh, do I even need to say that) that can not be the reason for a missed target at 600yd, 8" circle or smaller, clay piegion would be ideal. Ammo or shooter could miss but i would like to take the gun out of the equation if that makes sense. 16-18 inch barrel, perfer 16 but would do 18 if it gave a edge in accuracy. would like to run it with a suppressor so an adjustable gas block might be needed. I already have a 24" AR that will do this, I would like something I could carry around. the 24" has a vortex razor, I would use a 1x8 or 1x10 on this carbine. Oh and I need 2, my buddy was shooting my rock river carbine and my 24" (a Frankenstein AR I built) and he wants the portablity of the carbine with the accuracy of the 24". He knows nothing and would buy a mini 14 if I told him to. He is relying on me to find the "best of the best". So I figured what the hell I will buy one also. Mr seekins what would you suggest?

I like my noveske and my larue and my JP just fine. All three gave me good customer service. If i had to pick from the three I would probably go with JP again, there fit and finish is top notch and the service i received while ordering my SCR 11 was awesome. Noveske Second after that and larue a distant third. I only put larue third because i have never heard a bad word uttered about the other two companies and their owners. But Mark Larue on the other hand has had plenty of not so great things said about him. Then again does it really matter what people say about the person who owns the company if their product performs? It does to me but you have to decide if it matters to you.

I agree 2ndamendfan, I owned LaRue mounts for all my optics and thought they were the best and what everything else was measured by. Companies like Bobro and American Rifle Company were not even on my radar until I got on the hide.

I too thought Seekins was just scope rings, their new AR lower is at the top of my list for my next AR build.

JP makes fine rifles. One nice thing about the LRP-07 is it's light weight. Great single stage trigger.

I like my LMT. A little heavy. Close to $1000 less than an OBR. $1k is a good start on an optic.

I'm not going to mention KAC...

My LWRC M6A3 shoots well... but I must admit... I just picked up an OBR (7.62) and she shoots lights out.

Lots of good options on the market. I'd look at a LMT with a .260 conversion.

or get a mk12 mod 0/1 upper from Kevin at High Caliber Sales. Mine shoots very well with 77gr.
I also own an OBR .308 that is very accurate. I really like Larue products but if you want something else, try an upper by HCS.

Im fairly new to the Hide but quite surprised to see all the hate for Larue. I will throw in my .02 as well. I've owned a Larue LT-762 for about a year and just recently started hand loading for it. Last range session was .9" group at 220y and about a 4" group at 900. This came after many lengthy days learning the many facets to precisely shooting an AR platform and tweaking XBR. Needless to say I am very impressed with the Larue, the Larue mounts on all my rifles and the Mk 4 sitting on top. I don't have any experience with the others, but the LW-50 polygonal barrel in 18" is surely a step up over the other factory guns. Per Alfred at Larue, no breakin is required, first day was 10 boxes of 168 FGGM followed by a thorough cleaning. Now 3,000 rounds later it's still a tack driver. I'd buy another one tomorrow.

The question is what do you want it to do? Are you looking more for accuracy or are you looking for a shit-hit-the-fan rifle that can run hot and dirty (like my women)?

Most of my AR's are SHTF. For that I go with KAC, BCM, and Noveske.

For accuracy POF, JP, or build your own.

If you want a piston, go POF. If you want a DI, you've got some great ARs to choose from, all of which have been mentioned above (Noveske, Seekins, LMT).

I like having an adjustable gas block, especially for shooting suppressed. I'd also say that any money you save can be spent on a good optic, and more ammo. When it comes to ARs, it's not about who made, it's about how you run that gun. That takes a mound of ammo, good training, and practice.

I'd go with building your own. That way, you can get everything exactly the way you want it. It's not too hard and with a little input from some folks I managed to pull it off and ended up with a rifle I'm very satisfied with.

I will say that I chose a Larue stealth upper for my build. Say what you want about Larue, but they make a good product. They advertise their stealth uppers to shoot 3/4 moa...After zeroing, I managed to shoot a .7" 5 shot group at 100yds using remanufactured Black Hills 77 gr. For me, they delivered exactly what they promised.

+5 on building your own. I built mine with the help of a gun smith at his shop and it was extremely fun and rewarding. The only thing that sucks about a self build is waiting on the parts, I'm extremely impatient. All of the above mentioned rifles are awesome but I chose a self build because there were just so many different components I wanted for both my upper and my lower that buying a complete rifle would have actually been a waste of money for me. I would have replaced too many parts and then I would have all of the parts laying around and well....you all know what happens when you have several parts to a rifle just sitting there screaming "build another rifle". I'm a lefty so the entire rifle was built around a Stag Arms upper. It's a DI gun, it's never failed and there really is nothing I would change on it.

If you guys want to roll your own we have no issue selling whatever components you are looking for. Stocks and triggers are only available on a complete lower assembled or separate. No extra charge to assemble a lower for you.

For uppers we can sell you most of the components if you want to assemble or we can assemble, test fire, tune and ship you a upper with again about a million different options.

All of this will be on my website soon with a gun builder, so you can select the options you want easily and just order.

I recomend the LMT MRP. I have the small mrp with a 10" barrel, and a rifle length mrp in 16", and love them both. The 16 has an acog and has to problem out to 500. Ive heard great things about the obr, but Im lmt through and through!

Yes, good barrels are available. but, where are you going to get proof round tested, MP-inspected bolts, centerless ground bolt carriers, or dimensionally correct uppers and lowers? I have tried and so far been unsuccessful.

I've owned five KAC 7.62MM of one description or another.

I've owned three AR-10's.

I've owned five LMT MWS 7.62's.

They are all sold, gone, and good riddance. But, I admittedly have not owned everything out there.

I also have a Larue OBR and PredatAR in 7.62MM that I am keeping. As soon as the Larue PredatOBR (silly name, but I get it!) in 7.62MM becomes available, I'll get one of those, too.

I have no idea what you mean by "dimensionally correct" uppers, etc etc..... My EMC was quite, eh, "correct", and my MWS is as well. My old Armalite, rest its'soul, was pretty spot on too...

As for bolts... You ever taken apart the BCG of the MWS that you owned? The bolts are stamped "MP".....

The Larue's are pretty good from what all I here too. I would like to test drive one...
