Rifle Scopes Illumination needed with PVS-22

For anyone who uses the PVS-22, in order to see your day scope's reticle do you need illumination, or can you still pick up your reticle without illumination at night using this night vision?

Don't 'need' illumination, but there are times it can be useful.

I never turn mine on with the PVS22 up front. There is enough contrast to where I can still pick up the reticle.

Also, lum can wash out the picture.
