I got my 1st AR-15 today.

I got a Rock River Arms LAR-15 Elite Operator 2

Any advice on a tactical sling and the best way to mount it on the stock.

The stock is a RRA operator CAR stock

And what adapter for a Harris Bipod

Don what's your intended purpose for this firearm?

I run a single point on my 5.56, but on my favored AR15 in 6.8, its a VTAC Mk2 quick adjust 2 point.

The latter in my opinion is mor versatile as it allows me to carry my rifle slung comfortably in more than 1 place on my body, and it quickly adjusts to off hand if I need to.

There are dozens of sling makers out there - some will like the old M14 type, it really comes down to what features you're looking for.

For the Harris...I like some form of QD mount because I switch it back and forth between two rifles and I've got one 6-9 and one 12-25. If you don't want that kind, that's up to you...but if I didn't already have a CAA Universal Equipment Mount, I'd be all over this one.

I run the Magpul ASAP sling mount and their multi mission sling. I like them because you can move the rifle around easily. I am still looking for a mount for the Harris too, but the one above looks great, Brownells makes some nice ones for a good price too.

Rick is right, it depends on your intended usage. A lot of guys like the single point slings, and an attachment plate where the receiver extension meets the lower is my preferred attachment for those. Still though, I'm not a fan of single point solely because I can't transition to pistol and move without it banging me in the knees. Ladders, obstacles, searches, etc where I need two hands are also a pain with a single point.

Two point is my preference, and for that I like the Vickers slings. Transitions are simple and I can always shift it across my back when I need the rifle out of the way for other tasks. I used to run a swivel attachment up front, but have since switched that to a simple loop also from Vickers. It comes with the proper buckles to attach to the buttstock, but I deviated from the instructions and have the sling coming out the right side (I'm right handed too), as the buckle would get in the way when it was out the left side as instructed. It's also a big advantage to me not having a long adjustment tail dangling like other types. Three years at work and still going strong.

Never liked a bipod on a carbine. Too heavy and I position shoot with it anyhow.

Congrats! GG&G makes a nice one. Its not QD though. I think La Rue makes a QD for the Harris

I use my bipod on there for fun. I take my vertical grip off and put the bi pod on and shoot from prone. Just for the hell of it.

Rick Thank you for your post.
I think this will be the most versatile fire arm I own. In the past I bought fire arms for a specific purpose.
1 I plan on taking some tactical training. (Mostly guys shooting up targets) we won’t be going to war.
2 Maybe try some 3 gun. My next major fire arm purchase will be a FN SLP Mark 1
3 Thinking I might get a 1st Gen night vision scope and hunt coyotes.
4 Shooting range target practice. (Bench with my Harris Bipod)
5 Have some fun with it.

Thank you for your post. The bipod won’t be on all the time. I will use it on as a front support when I go to the range.

I don't run a bipod on my 5.56, it does have a Tango Down on it. My 6.8 though has a bipod and a Magpul AFG. I take off the bipod when the opportunity to offhand presents itself - I love the AFG as it just fits better, and I hook a thumb over the 9 o'clock rail. I know the 3 gun guys drive their firearms so maybe I would look stupid/ill-informed doing it my way.

I would go with a 2 point for versatility. There are some convertible slings that go from multi-point to single, but when you have to make a choice on how to prosecute a target, too many choices gets in the way. It's why I ended up choosing the sling that I do have. As with all things, practice makes perfect, and any choice you do make you drill, drill, drill.

The beauty and curse of owning the AR15 platform is you can always buy something else to fit your needs or desires. The darned things are never done!!! LOL

Rick I'm 59 yrs old. So I won't be national ranked shooter or go to war. But I do plan on having a whole lot of fun.

And there is always something to buy.

I shot my AR today at the range. (I wish I could have mounted my bipod) lol

It shot great everything I hoped it would be.

With my eyes either I'll have a 50 yd rifle or I need to put a scope on it.

Actually I was pleased with 50 yd shots. I didn't do bad at 100 Yards.

Hiya Don, at 50, I'm now experiencing issues I've never had to deal with before too. Where i used to regularly hit the center of a target at 500 yards with open sights - LOL, I can't even see that far anymore. Couple that with a mortar round going off about 5 meters over me and taking out my right shoulder - I'm right handed - makes shooting just that little bit more challenging, so my rifles are all AR (that buffer does wonders in absorbing felt recoil!)

Glad it did what you wanted it to! I like my sling for making sure any off hand shooting I do is "tight" - my groups stay fairly close at 50 and 100 which is pretty much engagement range for game for me anyway (even though ethically I could go out to around 350 with my 6.8)

I have to say when it all comes down to it - fun has to be the main reason for people like us to shoot.

Don,

Check out Savvy Sniper they have some videos out there as well that help make sense out of their design ideas. If you are new to slings, it can be a real pain when you find better systems than what you thought. Savvy has a sling that can position from one to two point which gives you variety.(others probably do also) Do your research on mounting systems also. I like H&K clips or trigger snaps. I went with a Larue padded (trigger snaps)as I do not like single points. For just competition, maybe a single point, but there are many limitation to what you can do with the gun when you can't put it down and your not using it. Blessings!!
