Hunting & Fishing I'm traveling from Missouri, where should I go prairie dog hunting?

My dad, a buddy, and I are going prairie dog hunting at the end of the month and are looking for a good spot to shoot some varmints. The more of them, and the longer the shots, the better! Any suggestions?

Id say 10 years ago I went with a bunch of people from Columbia to medicine bow WY I believe. It was crazy, there was so many. Anything from pistol shots to barely visible with the naked eye.

I don't know how it is today but the grasslands south of Wall S.D. along hwy 44 was a hot spot at one time. take hyw 90 to Wall and go south through the badlands to 44 and turn right. At one time the ranchers would let just about anyone shoot. Lots of open terrain, coyotes also.

South Dakota is where I went before, on some indian land. Looks like I may be making a return trip, keep the suggestions coming!

PD's are in a huge decline due to poison, over shooting and plague. Like everything else, when it gets to popular, it goes to crap. Last I heard, the Reservations and paying daily fees is about all that most can get now. Good luck.

Wherever you decide to go be sure you base it off first hand current info. RTH1800 is spot on with the decline of the PD's in areas. I had a huge town with shots out to 1000+ yds and the next year the plague took them out. The next best town was discovered by some others and they shot it up to the point of only a few left. The PD populations will vary year to year and when they get too large the plague seems to regulate their populations. I talked to a buddy in NE Colorado / SW Kansas a couple weeks ago and they had quite a few good sized towns to shoot.

Sounds like that corner might be the place to go. Could you give me any more info on specifically where the towns were?

I am hearing very bad things about KS & CO PD towns. I am sure that is not the way to go. Most I know of have canceled trips out this year.

Prairie dogs are on the incline here in NW Wyoming. Had a rough 2 years in the past but they are coming back. HWY 44 in SD is a good bet still Shot a lot of dogs there last summer on Indian land. Open and mostly flat with a little rolling hills makes some good long range opportunities

Take all this energy for PD and go focus it on wild hogs. They decimate land in Texas and Florida. You can hunt them year round.

Do you have any suggestions for cheap texas hog hunting? The college budget keeps things tight.

The problem with PDs is that we are one bad year, and one big mouthed liberal asshole away from losing them to the Endangered Species act. The idiots monitor places like this, so be very careful about what you talk about concerning prairie dogs, marmots and ground squirrels.

They aren't endangered but all it takes is the right idiot to get the other idiots singing his song and we all lose. Central Wyoming has a few towns, hit the BLM or Forest Service offices in Wyoming, talk to a biologist and buy the 1 to 1000 maps.

Do yourself a favor if you want to ever use that place again, tell no one of what you found. Or it will be shot out the next time. Best bets are private land.

I think towns getting shot up are a good thing, it takes a bit to recover, but it prevents the plaque from completely wiping them out eventually.

it is hit and miss out here in sd as the crst have stopped selling pdog license this year because of the plague but 15 miles north there is a shit ton on standing rock.
